1800 CALVERT STREET N.W.
July 2, 2016: Story & Photos By Elliot J Goodman
Saturday evening July 2, DC firefighters were dispatched after numerous calls reported a building on fire in the 1800 block of Calvert Street N.W. Upon arrival units reported heavy smoke showing in the front and fire in the rear. The fire had extended to the 3rd floor and roof. A Second Alarm was sounded including Tower 3. Units made an aggressive attack inside and truck companies did their job which held the fire mainly to the building of origin.
While I was in DC last week, I took in a haz mat incident involving an envelope with a white powder that was sent to the Council on American and Islamic Relations (CAIR). Though the substance tested negative, the entry team went through complete decon while I was there. Here is a brief video and some images.

DCFD units were called to the Pepco substation in the 1900 block of First Street SW (11/13/15). The response for the reported fire included a first-alarm assignment plus a foam task force, the haz mat unit, and the fireboats.
Companies stood-by at the gate until the Pepco personnel with PPE were in place at the facility to escort DC firefighters into the building. Light smoke was visible from the exterior. Upon entry, they located a storage room fire that did not involve the electric equipment and subsequently had no effect on service to customers. Several dry chemical extinguishers were discharged to extinguish the fire. Firefighters then performed overhaul and ventilation.

The Trinidad neighborhood was the scene of a working fire on the evening of Tuesday, June 2nd. The blaze was reported shortly before 9PM in a two-story condo building at 1218 Staples Street NE. First arriving units reported smoke from the roof and fire showing from an airshaft in the rear.
Firefighters gained access to find fire on the first floor that extended above to the second floor and attic. A working fire dispatch was sounded as lines attacked the fire on all levels while trucks opened up to expose hidden flames in the walls.
The blaze was brought under control without injuries to firefighters or civilians.
