The second time crews found heavy smoke from the upper floor and opted to go defensive due to poor building conditions and firefighter safety. Several exterior hand lines and an aerial master stream were used to bring the fire under control. Assignment: Engines 2, 10, and 11, Platform 2, Rescue 1 and 2, Cars 3, 5, 6, and 20. At approximately 1:35 PM Wyoming fire crews responded to the 2500 block of Batts for a reported structure fire, around the same time Grand Rapids Engine 10 reported heavy black smoke in that direction and responded to the scene. Engine 10 requested a full assignment from Grand Rapids to the scene. Crews from Wyoming, Kentwood and Grand Rapids found a commercial building fully involved along with a dwelling partially involved. Crews did great work stopping the fire from consuming the dwelling. The commercial structure was a total loss.
