At 11:40 Sunday morning 15-December, a US Postal employee delivering packages saw smoke coming from the roof and windows of a home in the 200 block of Gadsden Loop in Colleton County SC. She immediately notified the Sheriff’s Office.

Colleton County (SC) Fire-Rescue Engine 1 arrived minutes later to find smoke coming from the roof and eaves of the single-story, brick veneer structure. Firefighter-Paramedics forced open the front door and entered with one handline. They found the kitchen on fire with extension into the attic. A second handline was deployed to the rear of the house. Crews quickly had the fire under control.

While searching the home for any occupants, they found three unconscious large pit bulls. Firefighters rescued the animals and brought them to the front yard where they began resuscitative efforts on the animals, using Fido Bags which are carried on all Colleton County Fire-Rescue ambulances. The Fido Bags contain specialized equipment to administer care to canines during times of emergency. Two of the animals responded to the care and after about 30 minutes regained consciousness. Within 45 minutes, the two surviving dogs were able to stand on their own.

Sadly the third dog did not survive, but a fourth, very small dog was discovered alive during overhaul operations. This dog did not appear to have suffered any ill effects from the fire. All of the dogs were turned over to Animal Services officers. The home suffered heat and smoke damage. The fire was contained to the area of the kitchen and the attic above the kitchen. Most personal items and the remainder of the home was saved but received smoke damage. The fire started on the stove. No one was at home when the fire occurred. Units were on the scene for two hours.

Postal workers find many fires while in the performance of their duties. In addition to delivering our mail, they are in our neighborhoods daily and are able to report things that are not normal. The actions of this carrier resulted in saving three dogs and prevented the destruction of the home.

19/June/2023 – Structure Fire with Injuries – “A” & “B” Shifts

A Green Pond Community (SC) home was destroyed and the occupant was injured in an early morning fire at 495 Weiss Lane Monday morning 19-June at 05:51. The adult male occupant advised he was awakened by the sound of breaking glass and discovered the older, two-story wooden structure was on fire. The man was barely able to exit the burning home. The house was well-involved but he attempted to reenter the residence to rescue his 28-year-old speaking parrot. The flames and smoke prevented him from reaching the bird and the man suffered smoke inhalation and second degree burns. The parrot perished in the fire.

He then ran 1/2 of a mile down Weiss Lane to the Balchem Plant to ask for assistance and called 9-1-1 at 05:51. Colleton County Engine 6 and Medic 6 arrived minutes later to find the two-story, wood-frame dwelling fully-involved. Firefighter-Paramedics deployed two 2-1/2″ handlines and two 1-3/4″ handlines to the building. The structure collapsed shortly after fire department units arrived.

Engine 6 requested a second alarm and directed Engine 9 to setup a water supply point by the boat landing at Joe’s Fish Camp at the nearby Ashepoo River. A tender shuttle was established for water supply using eight tenders shuttling water for several hours. Saint Paul’s Fire Department sent an engine and tender as automatic aid. Due to limited access to the home on the single-lane dirt road, a staging area was set up for tenders near Balchem.

The occupant, who was covered in ash and soot complained of difficulty breathing. He was treated at the scene by firefighter-paramedics, then transported to Colleton Medical Center in Fire-Rescue Medic 6. He suffered airway burns and was treated at CMC with advanced airway care. No helicopters could fly due to severe thunderstorms in the area. Fire-Rescue Medic 1 responded to the ED at CMC and with the CARE Flight Flightcrew, transported the man emergent to the Still Burn Center at Doctors Hospital in Augusta Georgia two hours away. He was in critical condition. The home was completely destroyed and the man lost all of his belongings. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Crews deployed multiple hand lines, initially hitting the fire from the exterior, before entering the building through the front door. Most of the fire was on the second floor in a bedroom at the rear of the home. The fire had extended into the attic and burned a portion of the roof over the rear bedroom. Crews had the fire under control within 20 minutes, saving most of the structure and most of the occupants personal belongings. The upstairs rooms suffered smoke and water damage. The downstairs rooms suffered mostly water damage. Fire-Rescue personnel remained on the scene for three and half hours performing overhaul. The occupants, three adult females and a one adult male, were alerted to the fire when they heard glass breaking. All four were able to safely exit the home and notify 9-1-1. There were no injuries. It is suspected that a space heater is responsible for starting the fire. The Red Cross is assisting the family.
