Chicago FD Snorkel at massive fire

Chicago, IL 3-11 at Cullerton and Morgan October 9th, 1988

I took this fire in from Hoffman Estates as soon as I heard the still and box. (thank God there was no traffic on the Kennedy Expressway). This was a vacant 6-story factory, 200×150, and they had heavy fire on the 5th and 6th floors when I arrived.

There were several special calls that eventually brought ALL six tower ladders to the scene and all six were set-up and working simultaneously.  They would use 6-TLs, 2-ladder pipes and 1 Snorkel along with several handlines to bring this fire under control. TL39 and TL21 were on Morgan street. TL14 was in the rear off Morgan next to Trk 4. Squad 1 was at the corner of Cullerton and Morgan. TL10, TL62, and TL23 were set-up along Morgan Street.

I was lucky enough that the shot with the nose of Squad 1 in the foreground and the corner of the building with heavy fire was on the cover of Firehouse Magazine in May of 1989.

These were all shot on Kodachrome 200, they were scanned and run through Lightroom 5 to adjust the exposures.

Steve Redick forwarded this video of the 4-11 Alarm fire in Chicago on April 29, 2007

Just after sunrise on Sunday morning, April 29, 2007, fire engulfed this old Chicago warehouse in the 2100 block of West Carroll on the near west side.  There is a great video on YouTube of the scene before companies even arrived which was filmed by residents living in the building at the end of the street.  The 100 x 250, 3-story heavy timber building was fully involved before Engine 26 and Truck 7 arrived, sending thick smoke throughout the neighborhoods for miles to the north.  The building was being renovated into lofts at the time.  I arrived in time to capture the second collapse of the sector 1 wall which you can see in the first two images.

Here’s the video from Chicago’s 4-11 Alarm fire on Friday.

I took in the a 4-11 Alarm yesterday at Peterson & Lincoln on the north end of the city. I wasn’t too far away, otherwise rush hour traffic and the location probably would have stopped me from taking this in.  The first response was for a report of smoke on the roof. The Still Alarm engine, (71) reported a fire and requested a Box Alarm.  When the Deputy District Chief 2-2-2 arrived, he upgraded to a 2-11 Alarm, which was followed later by the 3-11 and then finally the 4-11. Additionally, two additional trucks and one additional tower ladder were called to the scene.

Engine 71 had a deck gun going in Sector 4 on Albany and they really had a fight on their hands with massive fire and smoke to contend with. Eventually they had to move to a more secure spot. Three tower ladders, one truck, and Squad 2’s Snorkel had elevated master streams deployed in addition to several multi-versals and hand lines. Four stores were destroyed by the fire and at least one more sustained heavy damage from smoke and the fire department’s efforts to stop the fire from traveling further.

Roofers working at the time are a probable cause for this fire.

I am working a a video which will post when it’s completed.

Chicago’s Gresham Neighborhood on the city’s southside, site of a spectacular 3-11 alarm .  Mr G’s Supper Club located at 1525 W 87th Street . February 2nd 2006 .  1 story ordinary constructed, 50 x 100,  fully involved restaurant/night club. This fire occurred in the cold, overcast 0700 hour.  Towers 39 & 34 took up positions in the front corners of the building as Squad 5 covered sector 2 rear. Several hand lines were used in the vantage point areas to the west. Engines 129 & 15 used deck guns on the east along with exposure lines to the south on a Chicago Bungalow.
