Ayr Ontario firefighters were toned out for a house fire at 1221 Industrial road at 3:52 am on January 29. Cambridge dispatch advised responding units that the house was well involved and all occupants were out. Ayr Car 2 requested New Dundee and Box 690 Canteen while enroute. Ayr responded with two pumpers, two tankers, and their rescue.

Car 2 arrived on scene with heavy fire in the middle of the large bungalow. P4 pulled into the driveway of the house and stretched lines to the front and rear while P1 setup for relay pumping form port-a-tanks out on the road. Cambridge’s tanker was also requested at this time.

New Dundee Pump 21 setup at a nearby reservoir and filled tankers. The temperature was a frigid -35 F with light winds. The large bungalow had a shake roof. The fire quickly spread through the house. Kitchener’s tanker was requested as the fifth tanker. P1 froze up early in the fire. Cambridge’s tanker replaced the pumper until portable pumps could be set up to feed P4. By this point most of the tankers inlets were frozen and tankers had to be filled from the top. Command requested Kitchener P5 to the scene to act as the relay pumper. The pumper is fully enclosed and had no issues with freezing up. The fire was declared under control by 10:00. Damage was pegged at $700,000.

Kitchener dispatch received a 911 January 21 22:00 from 172 Veronica Ave reporting flames encroaching her house from next door. While trucks were en-route to the fire PC asked dispatch if they had any more calls. Dispatch replied they had only had one call. P4 reported smoke visible from half a mile from the call. An additional pumper was added as the RIT team. P4 arrived on scene reported a working fire, asked A4 to lay into them, and for P3 to also catch a second hydrant. P4 captain could not access the rear due to a six foot wooden fence.

R1 was assigned to get to the rear to complete the 360. Crews advanced a 1.5” line in the front door but backed out less than a minute later due to high heat. R1 found a resident of the house in a hot tub in the rear of the structure. The individual was treated for smoke inhalation and taken to hospital for further mental health evaluation. Firefighting was defensive until the bulk of fire could be knocked down. This was a very cold night, wind chill dropped the temperature to -22 F. Fire was knocked down in one hour, damage was pegged at $400,000. Siding was melted off 172 Veronica, but there was no extension into the house. Six of the seven Kitchener stations responded to the call rotating crews back to their stations to warm up.

The Box 690 Rehab Unit gave out lots of Hot Shot hand warmers on the night. It was so cold I took a few of the later photos through the window of the Rescue. I was handing out drinks from the rear of R1, had to keep them in the truck or they would be too cold for the guys. The back of our truck was only 56 F, couldn’t get anymore heat out of the truck. It actually felt warm in there and glasses would fog up on entry.

The Newport Township FPD (IL)was called at 3:30PM on Thursday  (1-23-14) for a house fire at 38591 Arbor Court in Wadsworth. First arriving companies found fire in a large two and three-story house at the end of dead-end street in a sub-division without hydrants. The alarm was quickly upgraded to a Box Alarm as companies went to work with an interior attack supplied by one of Newport’s pumper/tankers.

Companies had to abandon the interior attack as the fire spread rapidly. Within minutes the alarm was upgraded to a 2nd alarm, then a 3rd alarm, and eventually a 4th alarm bringing companies from throughout Lake County (IL) and neighboring Kenosha County in Wisconsin.

An extensive tanker shuttle was put into operation with three portable tanks dropped roughly 2,000 feet from the fire building, at Cashmere Road and Crabapple Drive. At least 10 tankers were deployed, as they had to travel over 3 miles to fill and return.

The 4th alarm was struck out just after 7PM.

I was one of several photographers at the scene. Other photos and a video will follow.

Lincolnshire-Riverwoods (IL) firefighters were called to the scene of a house fire last night at 20538 N. Clarice Avenue in unincorporated Lake County. While responding, the alarm was upgraded to a Code 4 for the working fire. The temperature was at 12 degrees and a steady, wind driven snow was falling as the first units arrived to find fire throughout the two-story house with two residents waiting outside.

The husband was transported to an area hospital by Lincolnshire personnel, reportedly with smoke inhalation and burns. The closest hydrant was frozen, and the alarm was upgraded to a Box Alarm as companies laid lines to another hydrant and setup Lincolnshire Truck 53 for master stream operations.

Both Lincolnshire engines were pumping as well as Truck 53.  Mutual and auto-aid companies at the scene included Long Grove, Countryside, Buffalo Grove, Northbrook, Palatine, Northfield, and Grayslake.

Images here are from Sally Miller, a neighbor, and Larry Shapiro who arrived after the roof collapsed. There is a short video at the bottom of this post.
