Tones dropped for Washington County (MD) Box 11-2 over the Frederick County dispatch on Sunday afternoon alerting Company 5 (Brunswick) & 20 (Jefferson) for mutual aid to the house fire in Knoxville. Washington County responded with units from Company 1 (Sharpsburg), Company 6 & 8 (Boonsboro), and Company 11 (Potomac Valley). Special service units included Washington County Rehab and Air, and Rescue Squad 20 (Special Ops). Montgomery County Fire & Rescue units from the 1st, 3rd and 4th Battalions engaged in an intense firefight and performed a rescue on Iris Street in the Aspen Hill section of the county early Thursday morning. First arriving units encountered heavy fire and smoke conditions in a two-story house. Firefighters located a victim on the 2nd level and performed a rescue operation using ground ladders. The victim was removed and rushed to the MedStar Washington Hospital Burn Center with multiple injuries. Conditions in the house deteriorated to the point of command ordering evacuations from the structure.
According to reports the house had no smoke detectors. Two firefighters were injured during the rescue operations. Sadly, the 82-year-old victim succumbed to her injuries. Cause of the fire remains under investigation but is believed to be arson.

Photos from photojournalist and MCFRS photographer Beverly Jensen, and myself follow. I arrived later in the morning hours and captured some images of the apparatus on scene and the overhaul operations. Beverly arrived with the first-due units and captured some stunning photos of the firefight and rescue.
Many thanks to Beverly Jensen and to MCFRS Chief Public Information Officer Pete Piringer (https://twitter.com/mcfrsPIO) for sharing reports and photos from the fireground.

Anne Arundel County Fire Department units were alerted to an electrical burning odor in a commercial business structure on Friday. Upon arrival, units discovered high levels of carbon monoxide, spot fires and water leakage throughout the complex and surrounding terrain, and a second alarm was struck bringing more engine and truck companies to the scene as well as the Anne Arundel Alarmers Association (http://www.freewebs.com/anne_arundel_alarmers/apparatus.htm) Fire & Police support unit.
An underground utility fire was contained, units performed ventilation and had the incident under control within 4 hours. No injuries were reported.
Here are some scene photos from Anne Arundel PIO Russ Davies, and a bystander Jennifer Holtzapple who were both on the scene early. I took a bunch of apparatus shots when the crews were packing up and going back into service.
Anne Arundel Fire has some interesting apparatus including the air wagon which has a new cab mounted on the same E-One body used on past versions from as far back as 30 years. Attached are two photos of the wagon, one from yesterday that I took and one taken by John Floyd II from his archives, when the body was mounted to a 1974 IHC L-1800 Loadstar cab. You’ll also notice the abundance of other E-One apparatus on the Anne Arundel roster.
