Units from the City of Hagerstown Fire Department were toned out at approx. 20:00 hours for the house fire at 423 W. Franklin St. The box was upgraded quickly to a working fire assignment bringing in most of the city’s fire units including Rescue Squad 20, Air Unit 25, the Rehab & Canteen unit, and Hagerstown Community Rescue Service Co. 75. Surrounding volunteer companies also responded including the Halfway Volunteer Fire Company bringing in their tower rig.
Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire and smoke showing from the back of the attic and 2nd floor. They had the fire controlled in about 30 min. but due to the large amount of smoke and water damage, overhaul was extensive and units remained on the scene for close to four hours. Investigators are still determining the fire’s cause, but it may have started from an electrical issue in the walls of the two-story building.
This was one of the first major working fire assignments for the brand new Hagerstown Engine 1, a 2013 KME Predator with a 1500-GPM pump and 500-gallon tank and foam system.
All units went available around 2350.
