Montgomery County Fire & Rescue units from the 2nd Battalion and NIH (National Institutes of Health) company 51 responded to the HazMat incident/leaking propane tank on Fairfax Road in Bethesda on Monday.  Due to the explosive danger from the leak, evacuations of the surrounding neighborhood were ordered by the commanding officers.  The BCCRS (Bethesda Chevy Chase Rescue Squad) Rescue 1 team initiated the evacuation of residents on Fairfax Road leading the residents out of the hot zone to a safe location.  Buses were brought in as well as EMS units to provide refreshments and aid to the evacuated residents.

HazMat 707’s crew worked to mitigate the leak by flaring/burning off the propane throughout the afternoon.  The entire incident lasted approximately 5-6 hours.

Here are some photos from the initial evacuation and showing HazMat 707’s crew taking necessary gear off the rig to walk-in to the hot zone.

Montgomery County Fire & Rescue units from the 2nd Battalion including Rescue Squad 1 (Bethesda Chevy Chase Rescue Squad), Engine 707, and Tower 51 (National Institutes of Health) responded to the building fire on Connecticut Ave. in Chevy Chase on Monday afternoon.  This job was toned out as I was returning from the College Park Engineering Lab fire.

Units briefly had to double check with dispatch regarding the location of the incident since the dry cleaning business’ building is so small and nestled between some larger commercial structures.  A slight haze and odor was located inside the dry cleaners building and firefighters quickly cleared the smoke.  The incident was placed under control and units were quickly returned to service.

Montgomery County Fire & Rescue was alerted to the building fire at the Bethesda Country Day School at approximately 11:30 a.m. Thursday morning.  The school is nestled in a neighborhood just adjacent to the National Institutes of Health (NIH).  The small fire was contained to a water heater in the basement.  Firefighters knocked the fire quickly and performed ventilation while the school was evacuated.  No injuries were reported.

Tower 751 from the NIH Fire Department was on the scene along with Truck 706, Rescue Squad 741 (RS1) and Engine 726.  BC 702 had command.
