22/October/2014 – Structure Fire – “B” shift

Incident # 14-06216 – At 20:30, a Ruffin (SC) man narrowly escaped his burning home Wednesday evening 22-October after he was awakened by the heat and smoke inside his residence. He attempted to extinguish the fire which he stated was above the stove before he was driven from the home. The man ran to a neighbor’s house to call 9-1-1. The caller advised she could see flames through the woods at 1627 Deliverance Road.

Colleton County Fire-Rescue Engine 18 arrived minutes later to find the cinderblock single-family dwelling over 50% involved. Firefighters used a deck gun in an attempt to stop the flames before deploying multiple handlines. The fire quickly spread to the remaining structure. Crews worked for thirty five minutes to bring the fire under control, but were on the scene for three and half hours. The house was destroyed. A tender shuttle was established to supply water for the firefighting effort. No injuries were reported in the incident. The Charleston Chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting the man who lost most of his belongings in the fire.

Engine 10, Engine 15, Engine 18, Engine 31, Tender 4, Tender 7, Tender 15, Tender 18, Tender 26, Medic 18, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded. Battalion Chief Brent Dalton served as Incident Commander.

Lighting from a thunderstorm was blamed for damaging power lines outside the Wings Resale Shop at 756 E. Northwest Highway in Palatine (IL) on June 18, 2010. Firefighters were kept at bay until the power company could cut power to the lines as the building had become charged. The fire that was initially believed to be successfully battled ending up consuming the entire building in a pretty spectacular display.

On February 29, 2010, the Wheeling Fire Department (IL) received a call reporting fire in a  van parked near a mobile home. Firefighters arrived to find the van well-involved with fire already in the mobile home. They stretched several lines to attack the fire and protect the exposures. The address was 188 Phaeton Drive.

Another Box Alarm in Detroit, this one at 7299 Cahalan, June 18, 2014. A vacant dwelling that firefighters let burn as part of a policy to reduce the frequency of repeated arson fires in the same buildings. Firefighters used hand lines to protect occupied exposures on either side of the vacant dwelling.

While visiting Detroit with Steve Redick following the fire department, we took in a fire at 1456 Canton, Tuesday night. Companies arrived and reported a large, three-story frame that was well-involved. The first engines stretched lines to protect an exposure across the street and another that was across a vacant lot.

Here are several images from the scene.

I was home for a family function this weekend, and, has been the custom over the past 50 years, I caught a job.

At 0345 Sunday, Fire Alarm was receiving multiple calls for a fire on Garfield St. in South Lawrence. Fire was in an unoccupied 3 decker, a three-story frame 25×75 probably 100 years old and of balloon-frame construction. Initial assignment 2E, Ladder 4 and Rescue = 12 personnel plus the deputy chief (Box 6111).

The 3rd engine was sent while companies were enroute. A 2nd alarm was quickly transmitted bringing the rest of Lawrence’s equipment ( 1 E and Ladder 5).Initially fire appeared to be on all floors including the basement and was in Sector C. Companies set up defensive and eventually the fire burned through the cockloft and roof and took the entire 3rd floor out.A 3rd alarm was pulled bringing Methuen and Andover pumps and a Lowell ladder to the scene. Station coverage was Dracut, Salem NH, and North Andover I think. Attached images show conditions on arrival; the extreme difficulty in placing ground ladders or even an aerial to get to the roof due to wires.  Ultimately 3  ladder pipes ( including Lowell Ladder 2) were in operation plus 4 hand lines.
