Firefighter-Paramedics saved a Live Oak Street home after a passerby reported flames coming from the structure at 21:53, Sunday evening 01-December. Colleton County (SC) Fire-Rescue arrived to find heavy fire conditions with flames through the roof on the “D” side of the structure. Engine 19 deployed two 1-3/4 handlines.  Crews forced entry through the front door and quickly located the fire. They spent approximately 10 minutes bringing the fire under control. It was contained to two rooms, saving the remainder of the single-story wood-frame dwelling. No one was at home when the fire occurred. The cause appears to be electrical in nature and started in the attic. Water supply was handled with tenders. Fire units were on the scene for 2-1/2 hours.

Engine 19, Engine 24, Engine 27, Tender 1, Tender 12, Tender 19, Tender 27, Medic 19, Medic 26, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded. Battalion Chief Brent Dalton served as Incident Commander.

As we picked up from the last fire on 8 Mile, we were in good position to get to this box in an occupied commercial auto repair at John R and Lantz. This was an interesting job. On arrival we saw heavy smoke pushing from the building and the squad had just completed opening the side rollup door. The main body of fire seemed to be in the woodframe section at the rear, seen in the photos with the chain link fence obstructing the view. They set up a PPV fan in this area and the fire rapidly intensified and blew out the side overhead door, nearly damaging the aerial. It was moved before damage could occur. The fire soon gained possession of the entire building and the defensive attack continued. This fire yielded some excellent photo opportunities. We observed another PPV fan operation in the front of the building as well. I have never seen it used in heavy fire conditions such as this and found this an interesting operation to monitor.

Thursday morning, October 24, 2013, the Adams County Pennsylvania 911 Center, located in Gettysburg Pa.  dropped the Pre-Alert tone for Box 26-2 at 05:48 hours for a house fire with persons trapped in the gated community of Lake Meade, located in the eastern section of the Adams County.

Volunteers from Lake Meade, East Berlin, York Springs, United Hook and Ladder, Franklintown, and Dillsburg responded. Engine 26 from Lake Meade arrived on scene within four minutes of dispatch advising of a single-family, one-story, ordinary construction home, with a well involved attached garage. A working fire dispatch was requested immediately, adding additional tankers and engine companies to the assignment.

E26’s crew advanced handlines into the structure to make an effort to stop the extension into the living quarters of the home. The fire  got up in the cockloft and began venting through the roof within ten minutes of the fire departments arrival. The fire eventually extended well into the home and the officer in charge ordered the companies to go to exterior operations.

A Ruffin SC family was displaced following a fire in their residence at 471 Paps Place off of Red Root Road, Monday morning 14-October at 00:54. Colleton County (SC) Fire-Rescue Engine 18 arrived to find the one-story wood frame structure approximately 65% involved, with flames through the roof on the south side of the building. All of the occupants had safely exited the building prior to Fire-Rescue’s arrival.

Firefighters deployed two 1-3/4 handlines. A second alarm was issued shortly after arrival for additional tenders and personnel. The home was located near the end of a ½ mile long, narrow dirt road, presenting some access problems for responding apparatus. Units staged ½ mile away on Red Root Road until the tenders completed their dump and then rotated into the scene. Firefighters knocked down the bulk of the fire within 25 minutes, but were on the scene for four and a half hours performing overhaul. They were able to stop the spread of the fire to the north end of the structure, however the remainder of the building suffered heavy heat, smoke, and water damage. Water supply was conducted with a tender shuttle from a pressurized hydrant about 3 miles from the scene.

One of the occupants reported he was watching TV when he smelled smoke. Upon investigation, he located a fire in the utility room, with flames already reaching the ceiling. He ran outside to retrieve a fire extinguisher from a vehicle, but when he returned the room was well involved. He got everyone else out of the home and they called 9-1-1. No one was injured during the fire. Fire investigators determined the fire originated in the utility room near the area of the gas hot water heater. The Charleston Chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting the family.

Another Detroit job from Steve Redick

This fire was the same day as the last big Detroit job you posted. We found the fire and reported it immediately. Back porches on a mixed occupancy, tavern on the first floor apartments above. Apparently vacant. Embers were threatening a large church nearby. This was one of the first fires where I saw Detroit using PPV … it was reasonably effective in this instance.

At approximately 01:50 hours, Box Alarm 33-13 was alerted for a house fire with entrapment at 115 Lincoln Way East, in the Borough of New Oxford. Chief 33 responded and was informed that the police department was on-scene with heavy smoke showing. He requested the working fire and then struck the 2nd Alarm upon arrival for heavy fire from the rear of a two-story, brick structure with exposures in very close proximity.

The chief advised incoming units there were live arching power lines on the ground to the rear of the building. Engine 33-1 arrived, laying a five inch supply line, while Truck 33 took position on side Alpha, throwing ground ladders and then the stick to the roof. Engine 33-2 arrived to the rear of the building, advancing hand lines to the rear burning porch.

Heavy smoke and fire conditions met interior companies at the bathroom and kitchen area. At the 42-minute mark, a decision was made to evacuate the building. Crews were later sent back in to open the walls and ceilings while water and foam was used to get in the deep seated areas of fire. The fire was placed under control sometime around 0400. Eleven people were left homeless.

Many companies assisted on scene and several departments completed station transfers.
