Prince Georges County (MD) firefighters were alerted to the working house fire on 18th Ave. in Chillum Monday afternoon.  Companies including Chillum-Adelphi (Co. 34, ‘Bomberos de Langley Park’), Riverdale (Co. 7) and Hyattsville (Co. 1) responded.

The fire was knocked quickly.  I arrived after overhaul had completed and found Chillum-Adelphi’s Engine 341 as the last remaining piece on the scene.  Engine 341 is a unique apparatus, a 1991 Grumman FireCat.  It’s served Chillum for over 20 years and at hundreds of working fires.

New Hamburg Ontario fire department was paged out for a house fire on Waterloo St at 00:45 January 11. Volunteer firefighters responding to the hall reported the house was fully involved, with fire through the roof. New Hamburg requested Baden Fire as they pulled out of their hall.

New Hamburg responded with their pumper, quint, heavy rescue and tanker. Baden responded with two pumpers, and their heavy rescue, leaving their two tankers in the hall. New Hamburg and Baden pumpers both caught hydrants. The building was fully involved with heavy fire showing from every window and through the roof.

All fire fighting was defensive. Two deluges were set up in front of the house as well as numerous 2.5” and 1.5” lines surrounded the building. All firefighters were kept away from the collapse zone. The roof pancaked into the building within 15 minutes of arrival. Crews protected a house on the E2 side, and had to deal with a trailer that caught fire in front of the house. The house was totally destroyed. The owners of the house were in Ottawa visiting friends. The Ontario Fire Marshall has been called in to investigate the fire. Photos were taken at approximately 2 am after setting up rehab for firefighters.

A Ruffin SC family was displaced following a fire in their residence at 471 Paps Place off of Red Root Road, Monday morning 14-October at 00:54. Colleton County (SC) Fire-Rescue Engine 18 arrived to find the one-story wood frame structure approximately 65% involved, with flames through the roof on the south side of the building. All of the occupants had safely exited the building prior to Fire-Rescue’s arrival.

Firefighters deployed two 1-3/4 handlines. A second alarm was issued shortly after arrival for additional tenders and personnel. The home was located near the end of a ½ mile long, narrow dirt road, presenting some access problems for responding apparatus. Units staged ½ mile away on Red Root Road until the tenders completed their dump and then rotated into the scene. Firefighters knocked down the bulk of the fire within 25 minutes, but were on the scene for four and a half hours performing overhaul. They were able to stop the spread of the fire to the north end of the structure, however the remainder of the building suffered heavy heat, smoke, and water damage. Water supply was conducted with a tender shuttle from a pressurized hydrant about 3 miles from the scene.

One of the occupants reported he was watching TV when he smelled smoke. Upon investigation, he located a fire in the utility room, with flames already reaching the ceiling. He ran outside to retrieve a fire extinguisher from a vehicle, but when he returned the room was well involved. He got everyone else out of the home and they called 9-1-1. No one was injured during the fire. Fire investigators determined the fire originated in the utility room near the area of the gas hot water heater. The Charleston Chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting the family.

Another big fire in Chicago from Eric Haak.

The following photos are from a 3-11 alarm fire at a grocery store on Chicago’s South Side in March of 2007.  Smoke was reported coming from the rear loading dock area of the closed store at about 7:30 on a Sunday night.  The building was a large, 175 x 150, 1-story truss located at the intersection of 72nd and Exchange Streets.

The front of the building faced commuter rail tracks which made a tight squeeze for Tower Ladder 37 who operated from this position.

I included a picture of the front of the building before the fire pushed through the entire structure to give perspective.

Once it did, fire conditions in this sector were very heavy.

Hand lines were led out into the 4-story apartment building in sector 4, and companies used this position to get water on the fire from the windows of this building, which you can see in this view from the rear of the building.
