3-Alarm fire in Detroit, October 2006

Steve Redick submitted this huge fire from Detroit in October of 2009 which produced spectacular smoke conditions.

October 2006. 3rd alarm equivalent at Vinewood and Toledo, Detroit. Unoccupied commercial with storage of resins and chemicals. Heavy toxic smoke conditions caused a Level 3 haz mat to be assigned as well. This fire was occurring at the same time Chicago had the 5-11 alarm in the south loop, at the old George Diamond’s Steakhouse building. This was one of the more spectacular fires I have seen in Detroit, and I was awarded a cover photo on Firehouse magazine from this fire.

Dave Traiforos is in Detroit and submitted images from a commercial building fire yesterday, September 26, 2013.

Fire was in an occupied commercial building located at Pittsburg & Mason, right behind L-22. A Level 3 haz mat was called for blood borne pathogens located in the building.

There was apparently only one working aerial platform in the city of Detroit, so Highland Park came mutual aid with their working platform.

The fire remained at the Box Alarm level with a few extra engines and one extra ladder. In all, five engines, three ladders, one squad, one hazmat unit,  several chief officers, and two medic units were at the scene.

Smoke could be seen for about thirty miles.
