At approximately 0605 hrs on Sunday morning (2/12), the Englewood Fire Alarm Office received several calls for a fire at the intersection of 44th and Shields Ave. in Chicago. Engine 50 landed on the scene and confirmed a fire in a 2.5-story vacant frame with exposure to a 1.5-story occupied frame. Two minutes later, the 2nd Battalion reported he had heavy fire in the 2.5-story and requested a Box. The first image below was taken just before Engine 50 opened up with their deck gun which knocked down a lot of the visible fire in the front. There was a lot of fire extension into the occupied exposure and companies made an interior attack on that structure. Eventually Squad 5’s Snorkel and Tower Ladder 39 were brought down to mop up the remaining fire in the original building which was under rehab. In an October, 2015 Google Streets image, the building was a Red-X and appeared to have had a basement fire in it previously. Eric Haak

Firefighters in Chicago’s 5th Battalion rung in the New Year by battling this early morning basement blaze on the 6300 block of South Evans.  Companies made an initial interior push before being given orders to evacuate the structure.  At that time, the truck was moved from the front of the building and Squad 5’s Snorkel took a position in sector A.  With the use of the Snorkel and several hand lines, the fire was brought under control and companies were eventually allowed back in to mop up.  The large, frame residence had been vacant for several years.  I wish everyone a very happy and prosperous 2017! Had a great opportunity to shoot the reserve Chicago Tower Ladder 39 at a still and box alarm this morning (5/7/16) at 59th and Carpenter.  The fire was in a red x building and appeared to have started in back porches, which were fully involved when I arrived.  Companies were defensive from the start. Tuesday night (6/2/15), the EFAO sent Truck 30 to a still @ 66th & Lowe. We started heading that way when Engine 54 arrived and had a 2-sty, wood frame with fire showing on the 2nd floor. Multiple lines were stretched and they put Squad 5 to work.

Here are some photos from the Still & Box at 6605 S Lowe on 6/3/15. Companies originally went interior for an attack but once the chimney collapsed they pulled out and went defensive putting Squad 5A to work.

Here are some images from a quickly elevated 2-11 alarm fire Sunday (5/24/15) morning in Chicago.  The incident occurred on the 6700 block of Union Avenue.  Battalion 18 was given a working fire response at about 7:15 and Engine 54 arrived moments later and confirmed they had a 2.5-story frame that was totally involved and communicating to exposures.  Battalion 18 boxed the fire on arrival and quickly reported water problems and requested a 2-11.  Eventually the occupied exposure would be fully-involved as well.  The first five engines all went to work; 54, 47, 84, 116 and 50.  Engine 84 was in spare D533 and Engine 50 was in spare D598.  Both Tower Ladders 34 and 37 were also in spares.  TL 34 was eventually put to work making it 6 hand-lines and 3 master streams in use.  The fire was struck out shortly after 8:00 and Human Services was requested for 4 adults and 6 children.
