Wellesley Township Ontario firefighters worked a wood pile/mulch pile fire at 5051 Streicher Line, March 26 2018 at 14:50. Wellesley and Linwood responded with a full response and St Clements with their tanker. Water was initially drawn from a fire department reservoir two miles from the scene. Once command determined they were going to use more water than the reservoir held (20,000 imperial gallons), Linwood Pump 1 repositioned to a hydrant beside the Wellesley station, approximately five miles from the fire. Wellesley set up their aerial to drench the pile. A high reach was used to pull the pile apart. Crews were on scene over two hours, Box 690 provided rehab. Kitchener, Ontario fire dispatch received multiple calls for smoke coming from a house at 711 Westmount Road, February 3, 2018 at 14:00. P5, P2, A2, R1, and Car 23 were dispatched on the first alarm. P5 reported heavy smoke and flames showing from the roof on arrival. P1 was added to the call on this report. A passerby alerted the occupants that their house was on fire. A new roof was being constructed over the existing roof. The fire started in the void between the two roofs at the chimney for the wood fireplace. The fire was knocked down in 20 minutes with extensive overhaul to the roof. Damage has been set at $300,000.
St Clements and Linwood ON firefighters were toned out at 2:58 for a barn fire at 3649 Hessen Strasse, January 7, 2018. The St Clements district chief could see a glow from the fire and requested a full turnout from Wellesley. St Clements P2 arrived on scene to a very large barn with multiple exposures and silos. P2 set up in the laneway to the farm and pulled multiple lines to protect exposures. Water was shuttled to the fire from a fire department reservoir up the road and from a hydrant in St Clements approximately 1.5 miles from the fire. Firefighters were able to save a small attached building and all other out buildings on the property. The temperature started around -11 F and only warmed up a few degrees later in the morning. The farmer lost some livestock, but was able to get most of his cattle from the barn. Pictures taken 25 minutes into the fire. Box 690 provided rehab for four hours.
Waterloo (ON) P1, P3, A1, and Car 23 were dispatched to a confirmed fire at 515 Conestoga Road January 6, 2018 at 21:50. Waterloo Regional Police responded to the building for a burglar alarm and discovered the fire. Car 23 had P4 added to the call as P3 was down one firefighter from a med call. P3 arrived and reported they had smoke coming from the large building and requested P1 pick up a hydrant on the way in. Firefighters pulled a 2.5” line and went into the building to attack the fire. A second 1.75” line was also charged and put to work inside the car repair shop. The fire was knocked down in 15 minutes. Overhaul took another hour. Box 690 provided rehab at the fire, pictures taken 20 minutes into the call. Temperatures were a bone chilling -11 F. This was our second fire of the day having provided rehab at a large fryer fire in a poultry plant in Cambridge.
St Clements and Linwood (On) were dispatched for a structure fire at Broadway Metals, 3002 Broadway Street November 26 2017 at 22:00. Dispatch reported tires on fire beside the building. St Clements requested Wellesley’s tanker on route to the call. Pump 2 arrived on scene reporting heavy fire on the E3 side of the building with possible extension into the office. P2 set up for drafting and pulled multiple lines. Linwood P1 set up at the fire department reservoir located on the E1 – E4 side of the building. A four-inch line was deployed to the rear of the building from P1 and a portable hydrant was set up. Multiple lines were run off the portable hydrant. Command reported multiple double stacked skids with rubber dock bumpers on fire below grade beside the building. St Clements firefighters reported minor extension into the attic of the business. Command requested Wellesley’s aerial and rescue respond with manpower. The heavy fire was knocked down in 25 minutes with overhaul taking another couple of hours. The Ontario Fire Marshal was called in to investigate the suspicious fire. Box 690 provided rehab for 3.5 hours, our second fire that day. Members got to bed at 2 am and half an hour later were out to the Ellis Road fire in Wellington County, photos posted back in November. Photos taken 25 minutes into the fire.
Waterloo (ON) P1, A1, P4 and Car 23 were dispatched to a house fire at 87 Bridge Street West December 17, 2017 at 05:05. Car 23 was advised callers were reporting lots of visible fire from the house under renovation. The platoon chief requested an additional pumper, P3 after hearing the report. Pump 4 arrived on scene and reported a fully involved house fire with exposure problems on side B and D. Aerial 1 was set up in front of the building for tower operations. P4 pulled multiple lines from their truck as well as a 4” feeder line to A1. Pump 4 officer reported he was unable to do a complete 360 due to high radiant heat. Two, four-inch lines were hooked up from a hydrant right beside P4 to feed their pumper. The roof and second floor collapsed into the basement approximately 20 minutes into the call. Firefighters were able to protect all exposures. A car on the B side of the fire had a cracked front window and slightly melted side mirror. Damage has been pegged at $500,000 and the Ontario Fire Marshall has been called in to investigate the suspicious fire. Box 690 on scene providing rehab on this cold night, temperature was 12 F. Cambridge, Ontario Pump 1, Aerial 2, Tanker 1, Rescue 1, and Car 6 were dispatched for a house fire at 6571 Ellis Road November 27 2017 at 2:30. A smoke detector alerted the resident who was able to get out safely with his dog. Cambridge covers this portion of Wellington County under contract. A2 arrived on scene reporting a fully involved bungalow with no exposures. A2 pulled into the driveway and pulled multiple lines. Puslinch fire was dispatched to the scene once Cambridge reported the working fire.
Port-a-tanks were set up on the road and water was relayed into A2. Puslinch responded with two pumpers, two tankers, a 75’ quint, and a heavy rescue. Two additional tankers were requested from Rockwood fire. Water was shuttled from a hydrant in Cambridge approximately a mile and a half from the scene. Firefighters worked for over an hour to knock the fire down.
Photos were taken 40 minutes into the incident. Box 690 provided rehab. This was the second time in a week that we had back to back serious fires. This was our third fire in less than 12 hours having done a kitchen fire in Waterloo the previous afternoon, and a Wellesley fire later in the evening.
