New Britain, CT 2nd alarm 408 Arch St. vacant building
02/09/18 New Britain, CT – New Britain firefighters responded to 408 Arch Street shortly before 5 AM to find heavy smoke from a vacant four-story, residential over commercial dwelling. Firefighters found heavy fire in the basement which quickly extended throughout the 100-year-old building. Multiple lines were stretched, but companies could not get ahead of the fire. The interior operations were ceased in favor of an exterior attack. Two trucks and several multi-versals operated into the stubborn blaze. The fire burned for several hours before being brought under control. The entire building had recently been condemned, thereby evicting the occupants. A bodega and one additional business operated on the first floor. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the New Britain Fire Marshal with assistance from the state fmo.
01/28/18 Willimantic, CT – One of the largest trash management companies in the state went up in flames Sunday morning (1/28/18), just after ten am. Willimantic firefighters found heavy fire inside the facility. The fire quickly spread throughout the extremely large commercial building. Additional alarms were quickly transmitted bringing fire departments from two counties. The fire burned for hours and could be seen for miles. It burned throughout the night and into the next day when heavy equipment was brought in to dismantle the building. During the height of the blaze several collapses occurred prompting firefighters to setup additional master stream operations. One heavy machinery operator was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the state fire marshal. The DEP was also called to monitor air and runoff from the fire.

10/22/17 New Haven, CT – Just before shift change, firefighters in the Hill section received an early wake up call. They responded to 244 Howard Ave for a dwelling fire. First-due Engine 11 found heavy smoke from the second floor of a dwelling. Companies began an interior attack and searches simultaneously. They discovered that the dwelling was vacant and the fire was in the basement. The fire ran the number two side walls up to the third floor before being brought under control. It was later discovered that the fire started on the first floor, burned through the floor into the basement, then traveled up the walls. There were no injuries to firefighters. 09/01/17 New Haven, CT – A fire broke out in the building housing the Trinity Bar around two p.m. September 1, 2017. The fire occurred in a busy section of downtown with narrow streets and limited access. Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire venting from the second floor of a three-story, mixed occupancy building. Firefighters were notified of people trapped on the second floor. During the primary search, a severely burned male was found on the rear fire escape. A second alarm was transmitted due to the occupancy and heavy volume of fire on arrival. Companies made an interior attack stretching multiple hand lines, and were able to knock down extremely heavy fire on two floors. Trucks made the roof and performed topside ventilation. Multiple propane tanks were found on the second floor fueling the intensity of the blaze. One additional civilian was transported to the hospital with smoke inhalation. The burn victim was transferred to the burn unit of Bridgeport Hospital. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Glen Duda
Bridgeport 1165 Central Ave dwelling fire 02/05/17
Bridgeport, CT – Firefighters responded to 1165 Central Ave for a reported structure fire. Companies had a short drive as the firehouse is a block away. The second battalion arrived to find a three-story, Queen Ann style house with heavy smoke showing form the third floor. Companies attempted to make an interior attack, but were driven out by rapidly deteriorating conditions. One wheelchair-bound female was removed during the primary search. Members withdrew and took a defensive posture as heavy fire took control of the third floor. Two ladder pipes and multiple master streams worked on darkening down the fire. The blaze took about an hour to bring under control. The resident was taken to the hospital and the cause of the fire is under investigation. Photos were taken with a Sony cybershot Dsc rx100. 3-Alarm fire in Milford, CT 267 Melba St. Condo units 01/08/17.
Milford, CT firefighters arrived to find an advanced fire condition showing from the second floor of a three-story, wood-frame condo unit. The fire communicated to the third floor unit as firefighters were getting lines in place. Multiple hand lines were stretched and coordinated with truck work to stop the spread of the fire.
Additional alarms were transmitted bringing all of the city’s resources and mutual aid from West Haven and Stratford. Firefighters dealt with temperatures in the single digits while battling the blaze. The fire was brought under control in an hour through an all interior attack. Six residents were displaced and two dogs were killed. The cause is being investigated. Glenn Duda
