Kitchener, Ontario firefighters were just finishing dinner June 6 around 19:00 at HQ when one of the captains noticed smoke out behind the station. P1 and the platoon chief decided to drive around the block to look for the source suspecting they had a grass fire. Two minutes later P1 radioed dispatch for a fully-involved garage or shed, flames through the roof, on the old City of Kitchener Public Works property. An additional pumper, quint aerial, and rescue were added to the call. A 30 x 40’ former welding shop was fully-involved. The fire was knocked down in 30 minutes. Only one 911 call came in after crews had reported they had a working fire.
Box 690 provided rehab for the call.

P5 picked up a second hydrant (800’) to augment water supply to P1. The yard hydrant could not supply enough water to run the tower, one 2.5” and one 1.5” line. Gary Dinkel photo
