Wheeling (IL) firefighters along with mutual aid companies from several surrounding towns were sent to the area of 9930 Capitol Drive on Monday afternoon (8/8/16) for a reported car into a pond with people trapped. Wheeling Chief 2400 was the first on the scene advising that a car was perched over a concrete retaining wall with at least one occupant inside. Along with the divers and boats that were en route, an urgent request was made for a tow truck to secure the car so firefighters could retrieve the driver.

Several of the incoming units were returned after the nature of the incident was known and work began to secure the SUV and then remove the driver, who proved to be the only occupant.

Reportedly, the elderly driver suffered from some type of medical event causing him to hit two cars and shear off a hydrant prior to ending up on the retaining wall.

A Smoak Rd family lost their home in an afternoon fire Sunday 07-August. At 14:52, Colleton County (SC) 9-1-1 operators began receiving reports of explosions and smoke coming from a wooded area in the 1500 block of Smoak Road east of Walterboro. Several callers noted there was a home located down a long dirt driveway. Responding units could see a thick column of black smoke three miles from the scene.

Colleton County Fire-Rescue Medic 1 arrived in the area and had some difficulty locating the residence. The narrow driveway was almost completely obscured by trees and brush. Once on scene, they found a doublewide mobile home fully-involved at 1492 Smoak Road. The roof had already collapsed. Engine 19 initially used a deck gun to knock down most of the fire and deployed two 1-3/4 handlines to extinguish the remaining flames. Firefighters had the fire under control in about 20 minutes, but were on the scene for two hours performing overhaul.

No one was home when the fire occurred, but crews were able to make contact with the homeowner. She advised earlier in the day, the power in the home had been flickering. She left approximately an hour prior to the fire being reported. Water supply was conducted with tenders.

Engine 19, Engine 27, Tender 1, Tender 9, Tender 19, Tender 26, Tender 27, Medic 1, Medic 26, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded. Firefighter-Paramedic Zack Huber served as Incident Commander.

While flying back from Sacramento on Sunday, 7/24/16, I spotted this wildfire in Utah, somewhere south of Salt Lake City.

As the pilot was unable to give me any better information on the location of the fire, I pulled up this map which shows three possible matches for what I photographed out the airplane window.

At 4:45 on Saturday (7/30), the Main Fire Alarm Office gave the 18th Battalion a working fire response to the 1500 block of south Kostner.  Engine 38 boxed the fire shortly after arrival and reported they had an exposure problem and a burn victim.  I arrived with just a little fire left in the attic so the pictures are mostly of rig placement.  The first couple of images are of Engine 95 stretching a line to the second floor in the rear.  You can see in the third image that there was fire blowing out a couple of windows at the very front of side B, although one of the windows is not visible through the bushes.  The Still & Box was struck out in about 20 minutes.

Shortly before 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday (8/3), the Chicago Fire Department was dispatched to the report of a fire at 3110 W. Fillmore.  Responding companies reported a large header and a working fire response was then given.  Engine 44 landed first and reported a fire in a one-story, commercial garage.  The fire building was less than a half mile directly down Fillmore from Engine 107’s quarters.  Engines 44 and 109 were the Still Alarm engines and 23 and 95 were on the box.  Engine 99 would also have a hydrant as well.  Battalion 14 requested a 2-11 shortly after arriving and gave a size-up of 1-story, 100 x 75, communicating to a 2-story ordinary, 25 x 50 with back porches and fire on the second floor.  The first picture you see here was taken 20 minutes in.  The fire actually turned out to be in two separate vacant commercial buildings in the center with some exposure to Eddie’s Towing which was largely spared. I heard Engines 5, 18, and 26 sent on the 2-11 so I don’t think 107 ever made it in.
