Working fire in Walterboro, SC – April 11, 2014

A Walterboro man narrowly escaped a house fire Friday morning 11-April.

At 06:12, 9-1-1 received several reports of a well-involved fire at a residence located at 410 Country Lane. Colleton County (SC) Engine 26 arrived to find a singlewide mobile home with an addition and attached garage approximately 60% involved. The only occupant was in the roadway with only the clothes on his back. When he discovered the fire, he was able to quickly exit the home through the garage.

Firefighters deployed two 1-3/4 handlines to combat the flames. Fire had consumed most of the interior leaving only the walls on one end of the mobile home. The roof on the opposite end had already collapsed. Crews were able to make entry through the garage and stop the fire before it reached the garage area. The remainder of the house suffered heavy damage. A pickup truck in the back yard also suffered damage.

Firefighters had the fire under control within 30 minutes, but were on the scene for over three hours. The fire appears to have started in the area of the kitchen, but is still under investigation. Water supply was conducted with tenders.

Engine 1, Engine 26, Tender 1, Tender 19, Tender 26, Tender 27, Medic 1, Medic 26, Battalion 1, and Car 12 responded. Battalion Chief Brent Dalton served as Incident Commander.

3-Alarm fire in Providence, RI – April 14, 2014

Shortly after 9, on the night of April 14, 2014, Providence firefighters responded to 55 Plymouth Street for a house fire.  On arrival, Engine 8 found the rear of an occupied 3-decker well involved.  There were reports of people trapped, so engine companies began an interior attack as members of Ladders 2,5 and the Special Hazards performed primary searches.  Another period of high winds in New England is continuing and 30-40mph winds blew through the house, rapidly spreading the fire and trapping several firefighters.  Two Maydays were transmitted and three alarms were sounded.  All of the firefighters were able to make it out, one head first out of a window and landed in the bushes below.  Two firefighters and one resident were taken to RI Hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

I arrived about 18 minutes into the fire.  Master streams had been deployed and in two of the included photos, you can see a closed door help back thousands of gallons of water, to the point that the water was coming out of the window of the door.  The weight eventually became too much and the door gave way, cascading the water into the street.

Nunda Rural FPD (IL) 3-Alarm house fire, April 9, 2014

Nunda – Rural FPD (IL) 3rd Alarm on box #5-1371 for a house fire with exposure to a garage and a 2nd house last Wednesday. They had tanker operations working also.

8th Alarm fire in East Boston – April 9, 2014

Hello everyone,

So far this year, I have been late to almost every fire that I have been to.  I live in RI, about an hour from Boston but frequently travel there.  I was listening to Boston the other night and heard them strike the box for the fire on Lexington Street in East Boston.  This area is isolated from Boston and is very densely populated.  The streets are full of three deckers, separated by no more than three or four feet.

A fire broke out in a vehicle between two three-deckers and extended to both. District Chief 1 covers East Boston and falls under the command of Division 1.  On his arrival, District 1 reported heavy fire in two dwellings and struck a second alarm.  The wind swept fire quickly spread through the roof and extended to another building on Lexington.  District 1 struck four alarms within the first five minutes of operating, all before the deputy arrived.  Once on scene, C-6, the Deputy, assumed command and made District 1 operations chief.  Eight alarms would be needed to bring the fire under control.

I left my house as the sixth alarm was struck and arrived after the fire had been knocked down.  The most popular photo of this fire is of the BMW parked on the hydrant.  My photo isn’t the one that went viral but I walked right past it when walking to the fire scene.  It is one of those things that I can scratch off of my list of things that as a fire photographer I have always wanted to shoot.

Since I don’t go out much at night, it also gave me a chance to see how reflective the new green on green  stripes are on the new gear.  It is far more noticeable than the green with silver.  For those that are familiar with the Boston Fire Department, I included a photo of Engine 24 and one of the officer of Engine 52.  Engine 24, along with Ladder 23, are two very busy companies from the Grove Hall section of Roxbury.  Engine 52, housed with Ladder 29, is located on Blue Hill Avenue in Dorchester.  Neither one of these companies are remotely close to East Boston and it is very rare to see them there.

3-Alarm commercial fire in Indianapolis, IN – April 11, 2014

Indianapolis companies were dispatched for a commercial fire at 2009 Draper Street in the late afternoon on Friday, April 11th. I was in town for the FDIC and took in the fire. Conditions were not ideal for photos, the fire produced quite a bit of smoke that stayed low to the ground. Four elevated master streams were used and the fire scene was littered with out of town visitors (myself included) that were in town for the show.
