From Chicagoareafire.com:

Prior to receiving multiple cellphone calls, someone knocked on the door of the Leyden Township FPD (IL) station at the corner of Mannheim and Grand just before 6PM to report a fire four blocks down the road. Units found heavy smoke pushing from a one-story, commercial structure with a bow-string truss roof. The building was occupied by a tire business and was currently full of tires.

The fire, at 2200 N. Mannheim Road was in the Northlake Fire Protection District. (opposite sides of the intersection belong to either the Leyden Township FPD or the Northlake FPD). The Still Alarm was filled out and a Box Alarm, then a 2nd Alarm were requested within minutes, followed very shortly be the 3rd and 4th Alarms.

The roof collapsed early and sent flames several hundred feet into the air as companies setup elevated master streams from the Leyden quint, trucks from Northlake and Franklin Park, and then the Schiller Park tower ladder.

There were 16 engines, 8 trucks, 1 squad, and 5 ambulances at the scene.

At approximately 10:15am on February 9, 2014, the Bridgeport Fire Department was dispatched to 880 Hancock Avenue for a reported vacant house on fire. Companies reported seeing it as they were responding from Bridgeport Fire Headquarters and first-in units confirmed that with a report of heavy fire showing from the 2nd and 3rd floors of a vacant 3-story wood. The fire had already progressed to where it was communicating to the exposures on the B and D sides, and members had to help an elderly woman out of one of the exposure buildings. The fire melted siding on the exposures, but was stopped before fire could damage the inside of any of the adjacent homes. One firefighter sustained minor injuries after slipping out of Tower Ladder 5’s bucket into a nearby tree. He was quickly secured by close-by members and the mayday was cancelled. The fire is being investigated for arson after a dog from the State Fire Marshal’s Office sniffed out an accelerant at the scene.

The Chicago Fire Alarm Office received one call from a cell phone reporting a building on fire at 33rd Str & Keeler.  A still alarm was sent to this location.  Engine 99 found nothing.  As it turns out the Cicero Fire Department was receiving the rest of the calls for 33rd Str & Kostner for a trucking company on fire.  Cicero Fire Dispatch contacted us on IFERN and the location was corrected.

Some recollections … June 1 1987, about 1930 hrs. I had shopped here many times … a large store/warehouse complex. They sold and warehoused carpet and appliances. This was a bunch of buildings cobbled together, and they even had a railroad siding inside for deliveries.

The fire was heavy in the carpet warehouse section when I arrived. I lived in a hi-rise apartment at the time near O’Hare and could see it from my balcony. I arrived in very short order and observed a lot of standing water in the front of the building. It seemed like a water main had broken, further complicating matters. I setup shop on the east side of the building and watched the fire march from front to back. The Melrose Park Grumman tower ladder and the Westchester Maxim/Hahn mid-mount aerial would setup and the fire would already have raced past them. What little water they had came out brown and sandy, due to the broken water main I guess.

This fire was a huge loss, and one of the largest I have ever attended. The day after photos give somewhat of an idea of the scope of the disaster. I shot this with my trusty Minolta X700 with a Sunpack “potato masher” flash on Ektachrome 400. The film has gotten a magenta cast over the years which I have color corrected. Compared to what I shoot now the grain looks like the size of footballs. It’s hard to believe this was over a quarter century ago….
