4-22-78, a 2-11 at 46pl and Lasalle Ave. I processed these in my own darkroom, shot on TRI-X. I was riding on Engine 84 that day and we were due on the 2-11 … dropped a 3-inch line into the Snorkel if I remember right. Used a Canon Rangefinder camera

This job occurred in the wee hours of Monday in the 2900 block of Irving Park Rd in Chicago. A large commercial building, that had a large bowstring truss in the rear as well as a flat roof in the front. I arrived just as the fire was breaking through the roof. This was a very tough fire to shoot as the weather was light rain, heavy smoke hanging low, and a friggin’ center median planter with lots of trees. Also the Snorkel and one of the towers were in spares.

Two towers and a Snorkel were set up early, and there were some communication issues as well. There are a couple of shots of a company using a big line at the mouth of the alley to protect a large frame dwelling. Note the shots of truck 13 depict their new Crimson (ERV or whatever they call it now) aerial. This fire was in for a few hours and companies were there til around lunch time. Here is a sampling of the images.

Chicago, IL 3-11 at Cullerton and Morgan October 9th, 1988

I took this fire in from Hoffman Estates as soon as I heard the still and box. (thank God there was no traffic on the Kennedy Expressway). This was a vacant 6-story factory, 200×150, and they had heavy fire on the 5th and 6th floors when I arrived.

There were several special calls that eventually brought ALL six tower ladders to the scene and all six were set-up and working simultaneously.  They would use 6-TLs, 2-ladder pipes and 1 Snorkel along with several handlines to bring this fire under control. TL39 and TL21 were on Morgan street. TL14 was in the rear off Morgan next to Trk 4. Squad 1 was at the corner of Cullerton and Morgan. TL10, TL62, and TL23 were set-up along Morgan Street.

I was lucky enough that the shot with the nose of Squad 1 in the foreground and the corner of the building with heavy fire was on the cover of Firehouse Magazine in May of 1989.

These were all shot on Kodachrome 200, they were scanned and run through Lightroom 5 to adjust the exposures.

The Chicago Fire Alarm Office received one call from a cell phone reporting a building on fire at 33rd Str & Keeler.  A still alarm was sent to this location.  Engine 99 found nothing.  As it turns out the Cicero Fire Department was receiving the rest of the calls for 33rd Str & Kostner for a trucking company on fire.  Cicero Fire Dispatch contacted us on IFERN and the location was corrected.
