Montgomery County Fire & Rescue units responded to the Haz-Mat incident in Rockville, MD Tuesday morning.  Hydraulic oil in an elevator shaft/unit burned causing fumes to spread through two office buildings.  Approximately 30 of the building’s occupants felt ill due to the fumes, and the incident was upgraded to a mass-casualty event.

Haz-Mat units 728 and 707 were both on the scene to provide haz-mat mitigation.  Rescue Squad 703, multiple engine and truck companies from Rockville and Gaithersburg, and the Medical Care Support Unit responded.  The Medical Ambulance Bus was used to transport patients to a local hospital.  Gaithersburg/Washington Grove Volunteer Fire Department Canteen 708 provided refreshments and hydration for the firefighters, office complex staff, and patients.

Frederick and Loudoun County Fire and Rescue responded to the townhouse fire in Brunswick, MD, Box 5-15, at approx. 1330 hours on July 13, 2014.  Firefighters were met with heavy smoke and fire showing from a row of townhouses.  Heavy fire covered the back of the houses on the charlie side of the operation.  Fire commanders quickly escalated to a second alarm assignment bringing units from Loudoun, Montgomery, and Jefferson County, WV.  Carroll Manor Quint 14 and Brunswick Truck 5 established master streams while firefighters made an aggressive interior attack to perform search and rescue.  Luckily no people were found in the residence, however firefighters did locate multiple pets that succumbed to the smoke and fumes.

A 3rd alarm was struck about 30 minutes into the incident bringing more units from surrounding counties as well as the Loudoun County Medical Ambulance Bus to provide rehab and support.  The canteen unit from Independent Company 1 was on the scene to provide water, hydration drinks, and other refreshments.  Firefighters also battled the 90 degree heat and one firefighter was taken to hospital suffering from dehydration and heat exhaustion.  No other injuries were reported.

I’d like to thank my friend Kelly Lowery, Lieutenant at Jefferson Company 20, for submitting the pre-arrival photos, one showing heavy fire on charlie side.

Here is the full rundown of units responding (thanks to Frederick Scanner on FB):

Prince Georges County Fire Department companies were alerted to the structure fire box at the McDonalds on Baltimore Pike (Rt. 1) in College Park (MD) around 11:30 hours Thursday morning.  On arrival, firefighters had smoke showing with fire through the roof.  It appears that the fire started in a fryer unit and then extended into the building.

I arrived shortly after the bulk of fire was knocked and have some overhaul and apparatus shots.

Companies from Berwyn Heights, College Park, Hyattsville, Chillum-Adelphi (Bomberos de Langley Park), Riverdale Heights, Branchville, and Beltsville were on the scene, including the trifecta of Seagrave tiller trucks from Berwyn Heights, Hyattsville and Chillum-Adelphi.
