Working Commercial Building Fire in Wheaton, MD – November 5, 2015

Montgomery County Fire & Rescue units from the 1st, 3rd, and 4th battalions were alerted to a commercial building fire on Grandview Ave. in the center of Wheaton, MD on Thursday morning, Nov. 5.  First arriving units reported smoke showing from a nail salon on the 2nd level of the structure as well as smoke showing from the roof.  The Box was filled and the rapid intervention dispatch was sounded bringing additional units.

Crews made an aggressive interior attack locating fire that extended into the walls and ceiling producing a lot of smoke.  Fire was knocked, extension checked, and smoke cleared.

Crews remained on the scene for a couple of hours to clear smoke, hit hot spots, and rehab.

2-Alarm fire in Largo, MD – October 19, 2015

Prince Georges County Fire & Rescue units were alerted for the apartment fire on Monday, Oct. 19 at Green Meadow Way in Largo, MD.  First arriving units reported heavy smoke and fire coming from the roof of a 4-story apartment complex and a 2nd alarm was sounded.  The heaviest fire was in the attic/roof area of the apartment with some extension into the top floor apartment unit(s).  PGFD knocked the bulk of the fire within 10 minutes but remained on the scene for an extended time to chase hot spots and perform overhaul.

2-Alarm fire in Aspen Hill, MD – September 15 2015

On Tuesday, Sept. 15, Montgomery County Fire & Rescue units from the 3rd and 4th battalions responded to the apartment fire on the Leisure World campus in Aspen Hill.  Units arrived to find heavy smoke showing from an apartment building and fire showing on all 3 levels of the structure.

The assignment was quickly upgraded to a rapid intervention dispatch along with two task force alarms (a 2nd alarm equivalent).  More than 75 firefighters were on the scene at the height of the incident.  The bulk of the fire was knocked quickly but heavy smoke remained and firefighters chased hot spots and performed overhaul for hours after the initial call.

Multiple units of the building were damaged and 11 residents were displaced.

Thanks to the MCFRS PIO Pete Piringer for sharing the photo of Truck 725 working upon arrival with smoke showing.  I arrived once bulk of fire was knocked.

House fire in Landover, MD – July 31, 2015

Prince Georges County Fire & Rescue units responded to the house fire on East Forest Road in Landover, MD on July 31, 2015.  Firefighters arrived to find fire showing from the first floor and started an interior attack and search.  Searches were negative and the fire was knocked in 15 minutes.  Companies remained on the scene to knock hotspots and overhaul.

Crews from Companies 33 (Kentland), 46 (Largo), 5 (Capitol Heights), 9 (Bladensburg), 38 (Chapel Oaks), and 6 (St. Joseph) worked the job.  Thanks to Mark Brady, Chief PIO for PGFD for sharing the photo of the scene when firefighters arrived.

3-Alarm fire in Harpers Ferry, VA – July 23, 2015

Fire departments from Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia responded to the 3-alarm fire that swept through multiple buildings and businesses on High St. in historic Harpers Ferry on Thursday.

Firefighters received the tones around 3 a.m. on Thursday morning and arrived to find heavy fire and smoke coming from the historic buildings.  Fire apparatus from multiple departments and counties including Loudoun, Frederick, Washington, and Jefferson crowded the narrow High St, and along the back side of the buildings on Potomac St.

Firefighters were still attacking fire hidden in the roof areas by 8 a.m. and worked throughout the day to knock down hot spots and perform overhaul.  Relief and 3rd alarm units started to be released around 12 noon.  With temps in the 80s, firefighters rehabbed and kept hydrated thanks to donations of water and coffee from the local community.

My friend Kelly Lowery, a lieutenant at the Jefferson Volunteer Fire Company in Jefferson, MD submitted photos from the early hours of the fire attack. I arrived about 9 a.m. to get hot spot and overhaul work.

House fire in Bethesda, MD – July 7, 2015

Montgomery County Fire & Rescue units from the 2nd and 3rd battalions were alerted to the house fire on Howell Road in Bethesda (Box area 26) on Tuesday, July 7.  With the heat index in the 90s, firefighters battled a basement fire with extension (via void spaces) throughout the house.  The house has been under construction and one worker suffered burn injuries during the fire.  75 firefighters were on scene.  A one-alarm assignment with rapid intervention and a task force was dispatched.

House fire, Lincoln, Nebraska, May 30, 2015

While visiting my family in Lincoln, NE I took in this working house fire on S. 1st St., just south of the city center.  Engine 13, Truck 1, Engine 1, Air 14, BC1, Truck 8, Engine 8, and the EMS Supervisor responded.  Companies arrived to find smoke & fire showing with fire on the porch of the house and some extension.  Crews had the fire knocked and under control quickly and operated for about 1 hour.
