Firefighter-Paramedics saved a Live Oak Street home after a passerby reported flames coming from the structure at 21:53, Sunday evening 01-December. Colleton County (SC) Fire-Rescue arrived to find heavy fire conditions with flames through the roof on the “D” side of the structure. Engine 19 deployed two 1-3/4 handlines.  Crews forced entry through the front door and quickly located the fire. They spent approximately 10 minutes bringing the fire under control. It was contained to two rooms, saving the remainder of the single-story wood-frame dwelling. No one was at home when the fire occurred. The cause appears to be electrical in nature and started in the attic. Water supply was handled with tenders. Fire units were on the scene for 2-1/2 hours.

Engine 19, Engine 24, Engine 27, Tender 1, Tender 12, Tender 19, Tender 27, Medic 19, Medic 26, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded. Battalion Chief Brent Dalton served as Incident Commander.

Thursday morning, October 24, 2013, the Adams County Pennsylvania 911 Center, located in Gettysburg Pa.  dropped the Pre-Alert tone for Box 26-2 at 05:48 hours for a house fire with persons trapped in the gated community of Lake Meade, located in the eastern section of the Adams County.

Volunteers from Lake Meade, East Berlin, York Springs, United Hook and Ladder, Franklintown, and Dillsburg responded. Engine 26 from Lake Meade arrived on scene within four minutes of dispatch advising of a single-family, one-story, ordinary construction home, with a well involved attached garage. A working fire dispatch was requested immediately, adding additional tankers and engine companies to the assignment.

E26’s crew advanced handlines into the structure to make an effort to stop the extension into the living quarters of the home. The fire  got up in the cockloft and began venting through the roof within ten minutes of the fire departments arrival. The fire eventually extended well into the home and the officer in charge ordered the companies to go to exterior operations.

Several weeks ago, the Lake Zurich Fire Department (IL) responded to a reported house fire in nearby Hawthorn Woods, which is within their fire district. They found fire in an abandoned two-story house on a wooded lot that was extremely grown over.

Companies hit the fire and made a quick search before declaring the structure unsafe for interior operations to overhaul and completely extinguish the fire. At that point, a decision was made to standby and monitor the building, letting the fire consume the entire structure.

I was riding with Oklahoma City companies when they were dispatched for a reported fire on the second floor of a commercial building. The address represented a frame dwelling that had been subdivided into two separate units, which classified it as commercial. The upper unit had one rear entry which was blocked by fire, and a neighbor reported seeing the resident at the window in the ‘B’ sector or side 2.

While an engine company stretched to the rear and attacked the fire, the truck crew along with another engine company went to work to attempt a rescue from the bedroom window.

As the photos show, the room was heavily charged with smoke. After taking out the windows, the crew was unsure of the integrity of the floor because when they tried to sound it from the window they were unsuccessful at first.

As it turns out, the window was not built to code and the ledge was over a foot higher than it should have been. The occupant had no chance of escaping through this window, and was overcome by the noxious smoke.

Colleton County Fire Chief Barry McRoy submitted the following images and account of a fire that occurred August 21, 2013.

An early morning structure fire heavily damaged a home located at 1826 Wichman Street in Colleton County South Carolina. The fire was reported at 03:02, Wednesday morning 21-August. Firefighters arrived to find the single story, wooden residential dwelling heavily involved. Engine 19 used it’s deck gun to knock down the flames, until crews deployed two 1-3/4 handlines to the building.

The home contained an immense fire load, with clothing and miscellaneous articles stacked five feet high in all rooms. A neighbor reported that an elderly woman was inside the structure. Firefighters had difficulty entering the building due to the large piles of clothing, books, and other items. The heaviest fire was knocked down within ten minutes, but crews worked another 25 minutes attempting to gain access to the interior. A tender shuttle was used for water supply.

All windows and the rear door were blocked. Firefighters used a circular saw to cut away the entire “B” side of the residence and removed the wooden and vinyl siding to gain access to the interior. Firefighters spent three hours tunneling though and removing debris searching for the woman.

Sheriff’s Deputies were successful in finding her at a friend’s home several miles from the incident location around dawn. She was safe and did not know of the fire. Crews continued to soak the contents of the home to extinguish the huge piles of clothing and other combustibles. Fire and Law Enforcement units remained on the scene for four and half hours. Investigators believe the fire was caused by an electrical problem in an outlet on an interior wall.
