Round Lake and Grayslake (IL) responded for a reported structure fire, and found a one-story home well involved. Command upgraded to a box alarm. The main body of fire was quickly extinguished, but the fire had extended into the attic space. Crews attempted to gain access from below, but soon realized that the pitched roof was put on over an existing flat roof, so the only way to extinguish was from above. The fire soon went defensive and Libertyville’s tower was put to work knocking down the fire. One resident was transported for a check up. The State Fire Marshal’s office was contacted for a K9 to check for accelerants, as the homeowner claimed someone set the house on fire.
Long Grove (IL) firefighters were assisted by Buffalo Grove, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, and Palatine firefighters at the scene of a crash with an extensive extrication Friday morning, 9/2/16 at the intersection of Lake-Cook Road and IL Route 53. The driver of a car was trapped after slamming into and becoming wedged underneath the rear of a tractor-trailer around 1:30AM. Three sets of hydraulic tools were utilized during the extrication which lasted close to an hour. A helicopter was requested but was cancelled as the patient was transported to Lutheran General Hospital by Palatine Ambulance 82.
Kitchener (Ontario) firefighters battled a two-alarm fire in an old industrial building August 30 at 15:50. Firefighters have had numerous fires in the building over the years. Pump 2 arrived to heavy black smoke showing from the three-story structure. The building was being used to store cars and other equipment. Two cars were on fire in the middle of the building. The suspicious fire is under investigation. Box 690 provided rehab for the fire.
A 33-year-old male was critically injured in a two-car MVC in the 1700 block of Sidneys Road near Sunshine Lane Wednesday afternoon 31-August at 12:38. The accident occurred about three miles north of Walterboro (SC). Apparently a Cadillac turned into the path of a small SUV causing a “T” impact into the driver’s side. There was over two feet of intrusion, heavily entrapping the driver.
The man received critical multiple traumatic injuries. Colleton County (SC) Firefighter-Paramedics began treatment while he was still trapped in the car. Crews used the winch from Battalion 1 to move the SUV from the side of the Cadillac, then used Holmatro rescue tools to remove the driver’s door and displace the dash in order to free the driver. His condition rapidly deteriorated and he stopped breathing shortly after the extrication was complete.
Due to his unstable condition, he was rapidly transported in Fire-Rescue Medic 1 to Colleton Medical Center (CMC) with two additional firefighter-paramedics assisting with his care. The driver of the SUV was also treated at the scene and transported with non-life threatening injuries to CMC in Medic 19. Sidneys Road in the area of the accident was blocked for over an hour. The SC Hwy Patrol is investigating the crash.
Engine 19, Medic 1, Medic 19, Rescue 1, Battalion 1, Car 105, Car 107, Car 117 and Car 119 responded. Battalion Chief Ben Heape served as Incident Commander.
