Detroit: Chene and East Palmer commercial building

Detroit, Mi – While making our way back the hotel from the Sarena ST job we could see black smoke in the distance. We followed it and came across this commercial building fire with no one around but two police officers. The building would collapse before the arrival of the fire department.

While doing research on fire losses in ‘big box’ retail stores (OK, we were a bit slow on calls…), I came across, on YouTube, very old footage of a large fire in a Topps Discount Store in Highland, Indiana.  Dating back to 1963, it was shot on 8mm film and must’ve been converted to video at some point within the past 25 years.  You even get to see a nice happy family having fun before the fire footage begins.  Ah, home movies.  How many of you remember Topps (not the sports cards)?  There was one on North Avenue in Addison (near the original ‘Dog House’ that became Portilos) up until the early to mid ’70s that I can recall visting.  Anyway, this one is for everyone who grew up without cell phones.  Or DVDs.  Or video cameras.  Or push button phones.

Or, for that matter, SCBA…

Enjoy!

Prince Georges County Fire & Rescue units responded to the house fire on East Forest Road in Landover, MD on July 31, 2015.  Firefighters arrived to find fire showing from the first floor and started an interior attack and search.  Searches were negative and the fire was knocked in 15 minutes.  Companies remained on the scene to knock hotspots and overhaul.

Crews from Companies 33 (Kentland), 46 (Largo), 5 (Capitol Heights), 9 (Bladensburg), 38 (Chapel Oaks), and 6 (St. Joseph) worked the job.  Thanks to Mark Brady, Chief PIO for PGFD for sharing the photo of the scene when firefighters arrived.

Here are a few images from the CTA train derailment on August 5 in Chicago.  The call came in from the CTA who gave an approximate location of 61st and Calumet.  The actual incident occurred almost directly over 63rd Street.  It was a minor derailment and there were no injuries.  Passengers were escorted only about 100 feet to a stairway that led from the tracks to the ground below.  F634 was brought out from Midway Airport by Engine 127 but was not needed.
