Montgomery County Fire & Rescue was alerted to the building fire at the Bethesda Country Day School at approximately 11:30 a.m. Thursday morning.  The school is nestled in a neighborhood just adjacent to the National Institutes of Health (NIH).  The small fire was contained to a water heater in the basement.  Firefighters knocked the fire quickly and performed ventilation while the school was evacuated.  No injuries were reported.

Tower 751 from the NIH Fire Department was on the scene along with Truck 706, Rescue Squad 741 (RS1) and Engine 726.  BC 702 had command.

Around 5 p.m. the shed fire was reported on Lancaster Dr. in Bethesda.  Rescue Squad 741 (Rescue 1) was running the county’s reserve squad and responded to both incidents.  Engine companies from Glen Echo (Engine 711) and Chevy Chase (Engine 707) ran first-due on the jobs.  Both incidents were under control by the time I arrived.  Here are some apparatus shots.

Prince Georges County (MD) firefighters were alerted to the working house fire on 18th Ave. in Chillum Monday afternoon.  Companies including Chillum-Adelphi (Co. 34, ‘Bomberos de Langley Park’), Riverdale (Co. 7) and Hyattsville (Co. 1) responded.

The fire was knocked quickly.  I arrived after overhaul had completed and found Chillum-Adelphi’s Engine 341 as the last remaining piece on the scene.  Engine 341 is a unique apparatus, a 1991 Grumman FireCat.  It’s served Chillum for over 20 years and at hundreds of working fires.

Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Services responded to a power outage with wires down yesterday morning in Chevy Chase.  The incident area was cordoned off due to the live wires arcing & catching fire.  I took these apparatus shots of Truck 706 and Engine 706 staging outside of the hot zone.  As you can see the tillered trucks have to navigate some narrow and winding streets here in Chevy Chase Village and the surrounding neighborhoods.

I was home for a family function this weekend, and, has been the custom over the past 50 years, I caught a job.

At 0345 Sunday, Fire Alarm was receiving multiple calls for a fire on Garfield St. in South Lawrence. Fire was in an unoccupied 3 decker, a three-story frame 25×75 probably 100 years old and of balloon-frame construction. Initial assignment 2E, Ladder 4 and Rescue = 12 personnel plus the deputy chief (Box 6111).

The 3rd engine was sent while companies were enroute. A 2nd alarm was quickly transmitted bringing the rest of Lawrence’s equipment ( 1 E and Ladder 5).Initially fire appeared to be on all floors including the basement and was in Sector C. Companies set up defensive and eventually the fire burned through the cockloft and roof and took the entire 3rd floor out.A 3rd alarm was pulled bringing Methuen and Andover pumps and a Lowell ladder to the scene. Station coverage was Dracut, Salem NH, and North Andover I think. Attached images show conditions on arrival; the extreme difficulty in placing ground ladders or even an aerial to get to the roof due to wires.  Ultimately 3  ladder pipes ( including Lowell Ladder 2) were in operation plus 4 hand lines.
