Working fire in Chicago – March 1, 2014

Engine Co. 115 arrived at 12021 S. Eggleston and found a basment fire in a 2-story brick apartment building. Batt. 22 called for the Still & Box alarm because the fire had quickly extended to the 2nd floor. Hydrants in the area might have been frozen as there was a delay in getting a positive water source. Truck Co. 27 set up in the 1/4 sector with their main to the roof. The fire was handled by the companies with approx. 4-5 handlines.

Also of interest is while the companies were inside the building, a neighbor decided he didn’t want to wait any longer and he had to leave. He drove his car over a few hose lines but was quickly blocked in by 6-7 fireman and a cop. Needless to say he didn’t move much more.

Mobile home fire in Colleton County, SC – February 27, 2014

A yard debris fire spread to a home at 510 Bee Street west of Walterboro (SC) Thursday afternoon, 27-February. At 15:54, Colleton County (SC) Fire-Rescue was notified that the fire had burned under the residence and the home was full of smoke. Engine 24 arrived six minutes later to find heavy smoke coming from the singlewide mobile home and flames under the full length of the building extending up the walls in several places.

Firefighters deployed two 1-3/4 handlines with one crew working the front of the home and the other extinguishing flames at the rear. After five minutes, most of the exterior flames were extinguished, but the fire had burned into the walls along the back of the mobile home and in several places along the front. Firefighters removed the exterior metal siding and pulled up the floor in multiple rooms to reach the remaining flames.

A great deal of personal items were salvaged, but the home suffered heavy damage. The fire was caused by a few leaf piles that were burning in the yard. Light winds of 10 mph spread the fire through the yard until it burned underneath the mobile home. The fire then spread to the structure. All occupants safely exited the building. Water supply was conducted with tenders. The Charleston Chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting the family.

Engine 19, Engine 24, Engine 27, Tender 1, Tender 19, Tender 27, Medic 19, Battalion 1, Car 12 and Car 118 responded. Battalion Chief Scott Feather served as Incident Commander.

Companies were dispatched to a still alarm Friday at 7115 s Sangamon. While enroute, Engine 54 advised the EFAO that they could see the header and they indeed had a fire. E-54 arrived and boxed it. They had heavy fire showing and had the sector 4 exposure going also. Here are some of my shots.

Engine Co. 54 was first in to 7115 S. Sangamon and found fire in a 2 1/2 story frame. They made entry into to the building while Truck Co. 20 did the ventilation and searches. No victims were found but the fire did spread a bit to 7117 S. Sangamon, also a 2 1/2 story frame. Engine Co. 54’s hydrant man did find a frozen hydrant which caused the chief to ask for the Still & Box alarm. Companies made a quick knock of the fire once a positive source of water was established.
