Detroit Box Alarm Oakland & Hague – July 13, 2014

On Sunday July 13th 2014, Detroit 5th Battalion companies were dispatched to a reported vacant commercial building fire at Oakland & Hague. While enroute Ladder 7 reported smoke showing. Upon arrival a well-involved vacant two-story, 100 X 50 commericlal building was found. Engine 17 arrived on the scene and stretched on the building. Chief 5 arrived on the scene and reported a doubtful and requested two extra engines and a truck.

Defensive operations were used on this fire. Master streams were deployed from Ladder 7 and Ladder 20 along with several handlines. This fire was brought under control in about 2 hours. Engine 17/39/1/44, Ladders 7/20, Squad 3, and Chief 5 responded to this incident.

Detroit 2nd Alarm – July 9, 2014 (part 1)

On Wednesday July 9th 2014, at aprox 0113 hours, Detroit 7th Battalion companies were dispatched to a reported commercial building fire at W Vernor & Hubbard. While enroute Squad 4 reported heavy smoke showing. Upon the arrival of Ladder 8 a working fire was found in two commercial buildings. Engine 27 arrived on the scene and stretched on the fire.

Central office dispatched an extra engine for manpower. Chief 7 arrived on the scene and established command and conducted a size up. Chief 7 then requested a 2nd alarm. Defensive operations were initiated. Ladder 8 and Ladder 7 were set up for elevated master stream operations. This fire was brought under control in after two hours and a total building collapse. Engines 27/33/34/39/1, Ladders 8/7, Squads 4/3, Chiefs 7/5, and Car 203 responded too this incident.

Detroit Box Alarm – June 18, 2014

Another Box Alarm in Detroit, this one at 7299 Cahalan, June 18, 2014. A vacant dwelling that firefighters let burn as part of a policy to reduce the frequency of repeated arson fires in the same buildings. Firefighters used hand lines to protect occupied exposures on either side of the vacant dwelling.

Detroit Box Alarm, June 17, 2014

While visiting Detroit with Steve Redick following the fire department, we took in a fire at 1456 Canton, Tuesday night. Companies arrived and reported a large, three-story frame that was well-involved. The first engines stretched lines to protect an exposure across the street and another that was across a vacant lot.
