Fall River, MA had a 3-alarm fire today and it brought back some memories of the big mill fires in Fall River and New Bedford that I witnessed while growing up in Somerset, MA (across the Taunton River South Watuppa Pond from Fall River).  Here are some scans of Kodachrome slides that my dad (Michael F. James) took of the Kerr Mill fire in January, 1987.

I remember standing near the Route 6 signs watching this fire with my dad.  I was 14.  The big mill fires tended to draw a huge crowd of onlookers from Fall River and Somerset, and of course a huge assortment of apparatus and firefighters. You’ll spot the Civil Defense Rescue 1 squad in the one shot. The flames and smoke were so bright and high that they blotted out the sky and landscape along the Taunton River behind the mill.

The mill fires were fought defensively (surround and drown) and firefighters worked hard to protect any surrounding exposures.  These fires were huge and impressive, garnered headlines in the next day’s Fall River Herald News and were the talk of the town for days after.

Prince Georges County Fire Department (MD) units responded to the Level III HazMat at the Laboratory for Physical Sciences (http://www.lps.umd.edu/) on the campus of the University of Maryland Friday afternoon.  Units discovered a release of what is being reported as hydrogen bromide in a “Lab Clean Room”.

HazMat units worked to contain the release and also performed a three stage decontamination of the firefighters and HazMat technicians who were involved in the operation.

Units from the Prince Georges County HazMat team were on the scene as well as support units including Squad 14 (Berwyn Heights), Engine 12 (College Park), Truck 34 (Chillum-Adelphi), Engine 1 (Hyattsville), the PGFD Command Unit and various other engine companies, battalion chief units and support teams.

Thanks to Mark Brady, Chief PIO of PGFD for supplying info on the incident via his Twitter feed https://twitter.com/PGFDPIO.

At this time, no one was reported to be injured from the incident.  The incident was ongoing as of 6 p.m. on Friday but units were working to complete the decon process.

Units from the City of Hagerstown Fire Department were toned out at approx. 20:00 hours for the house fire at 423 W. Franklin St.  The box was upgraded quickly to a working fire assignment bringing in most of the city’s fire units including Rescue Squad 20, Air Unit 25, the Rehab & Canteen unit, and Hagerstown Community Rescue Service Co. 75.  Surrounding volunteer companies also responded including the Halfway Volunteer Fire Company bringing in their tower rig.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire and smoke showing from the back of the attic and 2nd floor.  They had the fire controlled in about 30 min. but due to the large amount of smoke and water damage, overhaul was extensive and units remained on the scene for close to four hours.  Investigators are still determining the fire’s cause, but it may have started from an electrical issue in the walls of the two-story building.

This was one of the first major working fire assignments for the brand new Hagerstown Engine 1, a 2013 KME Predator with a 1500-GPM pump and 500-gallon tank and foam system.

All units went available around 2350.

Here is the complete assignment via Washington Co. MD Fire Calls FB page:

Around 12:21 hours on Tuesday (July 29)  Frederick County Fire & Rescue units were toned out for High-Rise Box 1-8 at the Hickory Hill Apartments off of Key Parkway in Frederick City.  Firefighters from Company 1 (Independent) and Company 4 (Citizen Truck) arrived to find smoke showing from the three-story apartment building.  Occupants were trapped on the 3rd level of the unit and firefighters used ground ladders to perform rescues of up to 10 occupants from the building.  Chief 1 had command and ordered a rapid intervention dispatch bringing Middletown Rescue Engine 74, Ambulance 38 (being staffed by Brunswick Vol Amb. Co. 19), Medic 1, and Jefferson Engine 201 to the scene.

Rescue Squad 2 (Junior Fire Company) and Rescue Squad 6 (Emmitsburg) as well as units from Fort Detrick (Engine 501), Urbana (Tower 23), Jefferson (Engine Tanker 204), Braddock Heights (Engine 122), New Market (Engine 152), and Middletown (Rescue Engine 74) were also dispatched on the initial alarm.

Photos include one of the rescues being performed by firefighters from Co. 1 and Co. 4 courtesy of my friend Lieutenant Kelly Lowery, and a shot of a firefighter performing ventilation courtesy of David Clark.  I arrived after the rescues occurred and took overhaul and apparatus shots.

One additional note – Jefferson and Emmitsburg companies were detailing at Company 3 (United) in downtown Frederick today while Co. 3 members took part in the funeral for long-time member and firefighter Mark Fisher.  New Market was filling in at Company 31 as their members were also taking part in the funeral detail.  Thanks to Lieut. Lowery for the full rundown of the units and dispatch assignments.

Montgomery County Fire & Rescue units from the 2nd battalion were toned out on Monday morning for the house fire in Chevy Chase on Cummings Lane.  Multiple callers to 911 dispatch reported smoke.  First-due units including Rescue 1 (Bethesda Chevy Chase Rescue Squad), Truck 706, and Engine 707 arrived to find smoke showing from multiple sides of the structure.  As firefighters began their interior attack, a RIT alarm was toned bringing PGFD (Prince Georges County Fire Department) Rescue Squad 801 to the scene to fulfill RIT duties.

An aggressive interior attack was made on the 1st and 2nd levels and into the basement of the house, and multiple searches were performed by the squad company, all reporting as negative.  Fire was knocked quickly and units remained in the structure to clear smoke and check for extension.

RIT was de-escalated placing RS801 back into service.  Units including Engine 754 from Fort Detrick briefly took over RIT duties and then helped with overhaul.  Rehab was performed by the Bethesda Chevy Chase Rescue Squad EMTs and Paramedics.  The air unit re-supplied bottles, and the Kensington Canteen unit provided cold refreshments to assist with rehab.  Battalion 702 had command.  Units remained on the scene for approx. 3 hours.  Here are some overhaul shots.

Montgomery County Fire & Rescue 3rd and 4th battalion units were toned out for the Building Fire on Friday at the Burger King on Darnestown Road.  Firefighters arrived to find fire and smoke showing from the entrance of the restaurant and made a quick interior and exterior attack.  A tower ladder and tiller were established on adjacent sides of the building, and firefighters opened up the roofing area around the entrance-way using ground ladders, chain saws and Halligan tools.  Firefighters applied foam to the roofing to knock down remaining hot spots.

Units from Rockville, Kensington, Germantown, along with the Mobile Air Unit responded.  The fire was under control within minutes of arrival with overhaul taking approx. 45 min to complete.

Montgomery County Fire & Rescue units from Bethesda and Silver Spring responded to the building fire in downtown Bethesda on Tuesday evening.  Units arrived to find a smoke haze on the penthouse level.  Truck companies provided ventilation and Rescue 1 (Bethesda Chevy Chase Rescue Squad 741) did a search and investigation of the building floors.  The issue was determined to be a malfunctioning HVAC unit.

Here are some apparatus shots and crew pickup including Truck 706 with their extended aerial ladder to the building.
