New Hamburg Ontario firefighters were dispatched for a structure fire at the New Hamburg cleaners January 29 at 19:15. New Hamburg chief reported the building was fully involved on his way to the hall and requested a full response from Baden. New Hamburg responded with their pumper, quint, tanker and heavy rescue. The quint was set up in the parking lot in front of the building for tower operations.

Numerous 2.5″ and 1.5” lines were pulled from New Hamburg’s pumper. Baden responded with two pumpers, a heavy rescue, and both tankers. Baden Pump 1 picked up a hydrant on the E2 side and pulled two 2.5” lines for fire attack and exposure protection. Baden P2 relay pumped to New Hamburg’s pumper. New Dundee’s pump was dispatched to Baden hall for cover up, but was rerouted to the scene and caught a hydrant on Jacob St. They pulled two 2.5” lines into the rear of the building.

Crews worked for three hours to bring the fire under control. They successfully protected all exposures. Damage was pegged at $1,000,000. This was a very cold night with temperatures dipping to -20F.

This was the second major fire in two days involving the three Wilmot stations. The previous night all three stations responded to a fully involved large 2.5-story farm house under renovation just south of town. The temperature dipped to -30F with the wind chill. Trucks had to be rotated from the scene as three pumpers and the aerial froze up over the course of the fire. Damage was estimated at $400,000.
