Wilmette (IL) companies responded to an automatic fire alarm at the Woman’s Club of Wilmette, 930 Greenleaf Avenue around 10AM Tuesday morning (2/17/15). Upon rounding the corner, smoke was visible through the roof and the alarm was upgraded to a Code 4 (working fire).

The occupants were out of the building when the fire department arrived and firefighters made an initial interior attack before being forced to withdraw. The alarm was upgraded to a Box Alarm for additional companies.

Four aerial master streams were operating along with several hand lines. A large collapse occurred on the B-Side of the structure that took down power lines.

Departments that assisted were Northbrook, Evanston, Morton Grove, Winnetka, Lincolnwood, Glenview, Northfield, Des Plaines, and Skokie.

An automatic alarm alerted the Wauconda Fire Department (IL) to a fire Tuesday night at the Sikh temple on State Road in Island Lake. Smoke was showing on arrival and the alarm was upgraded to a 2nd Alarm. The building was a total loss. Images from Jeff Rudolph show the scene almost an hour before I arrived.

The Prospect Heights FD (IL) was alerted to a house fire around 3AM today (Monday, 11/3/14) at 1201 N. Stratford Road. While en route they were notified that a 14-year old boy was trapped inside and the other family members were outside. Several police officers attempted to search for the boy but were forced out by heavy fire conditions and smoke.

Arlington Heights Engine 2 was the first unit on-scene with heavy fire in the center of the house. The street is without hydrants and supply lines were dropped to an Arlington Heights street in one direction and to a shopping center across a four-lane road at the other end. Water was a problem for a short time as Engine 2 experienced mechanical issues that prevented supplying the lines. Additional lines were supplied from Prospect Heights Tower 9.

A Box Alarm was requested along with several additional ambulances as the two adults from the house and three police officers required medical attention. One ambulance was held for a possible rescue of the missing boy.

It was determined that the boy was not at home and he was later found elsewhere. Two people were transported to the hospital.

I responded to a head-on crash today with Buffalo Grove (IL)  Quint 27. We were sent into Long Grove for a reported crash between a car and a semi where the car’s driver was trapped and the engine compartment was on fire. The unconscious driver was freed and later pronounced dead at an area hospital. Firefighters fought the fire and worked to extricate the driver simultaneously. The airbag did not deploy evidently due to the nature of the collision.

Lighting from a thunderstorm was blamed for damaging power lines outside the Wings Resale Shop at 756 E. Northwest Highway in Palatine (IL) on June 18, 2010. Firefighters were kept at bay until the power company could cut power to the lines as the building had become charged. The fire that was initially believed to be successfully battled ending up consuming the entire building in a pretty spectacular display.
