Took in the still & box alarm Sunday at Cortland and Kingsbury in Chicago, an industrial area with a fire in a large scrap metal operation. A big stack of junk cars was going. This location is right on the river, so as a result Engine 2, the large fireboat was sent to the scene. They eventually supplied a 4-inch line to Engine 55 which then supplied a multiversal. There was some thought about using the big guns, and the “crows nest” turret was raised on the rear of the boat, but there was not really a clear shot to the burning pile from the river location. Access in and around the scene was poor. All of the photos and video from this incident can be seen on my site

Chicago 2-11 Alarm fire at 1525 W 18th St. the Nuevo Leon restaurant. This was a locally famous mexican eatery. The restaurant occupied and connected the first floor of two similar 3 1/2-story ordinary buildings, the rear had a one-story addition as well as some kind of storage area or garage. Fire had full possession of most of one building and spread into all floors of the exposure to the west, which as I mentioned was connected to the fire building. Two towers and Squad 1 operated here. Notice how many wires and cables Squad 1 had to deal with in the rear, and I daresay a full-size Snorkel or aerial would not have been able to get into this tight spot. Not many good shots to get … low hanging smoke, poor access, and misty rain ruled to day. All the images and the video can be seen here on my site:

Later in the alarm a fireground event, described as a smoke explosion, backdraft  or possibly a collapse created a tremendous sudden push of smoke and heat from the building. I captured some images of conditions in the front of the building just as this occurred, and also got some images of the RIT deploying in response to a brief mayday that was declared.

The east side of the building had an overhead door, and when the event happened a large rush of heat , smoke, fire, and air vented out of this opening, injuring 3 members. I believe all are ok, with some minor injuries. I don’t believe the RIT actually performed any actual rescue as the injured members were upright in short order.  I personally think a large portion of the roof came down causing this rapid exit of fire gasses … mind you just my opinion … I am not qualified to truly judge what actually happened.

Took this in Friday (10/30/15). I arrived shortly after the 3-11 was pulled. Fire was involving several stores in the cockloft area and rapidly spreading to other occupancies at 3536 W. Irving park Road in Chicago. The overhead view I supplied gives an idea of the construction and layout. Three tower ladders, a Snorkel, and several multiversals and handlines were utilized. Collapse became a significant concern as the operations progressed.

Chicago firefighters responded for reports of smoke just before 4AM to Harry’s Lumber at 6220 N. Northwest Highway, the site of a previous 5-11 Alarm fire in 1990. Companies found a fire in the warehouse building and upgraded to a Still & Box Alarm and then a 2-11 Alarm fire. Hand lines were used and the MVU 9-2-3 was put to work though lines were never charged to either tower ladder. The Alarm was struck out shortly before 5:30AM.

At roughly 6:50AM companies still on the scene asked for a Full Still and RIT response back to the scene. Within minutes it was upgraded to a Still & Box Alarm and then a 2-11 Alarm with instructions for elevated master streams.

Yesterday about 0600 at 64th & Woodlawn in Chicago.. Large monolithic type church building with an attached school. Extensive remodeling was taking place and apparently spontaneous ignition of some varnish soaked rages was the origin.

The fire was in the choir loft and involved the roof in short order. It was pretty much defensive from arrival. The attached school building was apparently being used as a  shelter for challenged people.

The fire was confined to the church occupancy. Three tower ladders, a deck gun, and multi-versal in addition to a point of vantage line were all used. This area was once the equivalent of the south bronx … large vacants and numerous fires.
