Niles (IL) companies responded to an apartment fire (1/15/16) at 9701 Dee Road. Arriving units found fire blowing out a 5th floor balcony and heavy smoke out the side window of a corner unit. The Alarm was upgraded to a Code 4 for the working fire and then to a Box Alarm. As crews made searches and found multiple occupants in the building an EMS Box Alarm was struck as a precaution. The fire was contained in short order and was held to the unit of origin plus the hallway. Several residents that were unable to self evacuate were held in place within their apartments.

Three aerials were setup around the building and Niles Engine 2 had a line charging the standpipe system.

I took in a job in an area I seldom get to. A full-still response for fire in a double-wide mobile home inside a large trailer park, in the town of Justice, IL served by the Roberts Park Fire Protection District. Extreme cold conditions coupled with severe water problems made this an extended job. They used booster tank water from two engines and finally were able to find a working hydrant several hundred feet away. Eventually a tower ladder was set up and used as the collapsed roof area was preventing penetration of ground-based exterior streams. All in all a tough job on a miserable day.

Cicero (IL) companies responded to a reported apartment fire at 1401 51st Court early Monday afternoon (1/11/16). Arriving companies had smoke at the eaves of the three-story, frame, multi-unit building. After companies were forced out of the structure they setup for defensive operations and upgraded to a Box Alarm about 30 minutes later.

Several hand lines were used as well as master streams from Cicero Truck 2, Stickney Truck 1201, and Cicero Truck 1. There was a special call for the Forest Park tower ladder which went into service after Cicero Truck 1 was shut down. All Cicero engines were pumping in addition engines from Stickney and Lyons.

This was a box with 6 engines assigned at St John and Apple, a vacant 2-flat. Heavy fire in the rear and attic … narrowly kept from consuming both exposures. Access to the rear in Detroit is very iffy as there really are no passable alleys. Some good use of handlines and a master stream minimized the potential of several buildings becoming involved. Some interesting chunky smoke pictures from the attic.

While sitting outside 50 we saw the smoke from this job in the sky. Eng 60 spotted it and beat us to the scene by a minute or so. Vacant, apparently started as rubbish but involved a good portion of the dwelling. Too bad it was so overgrown and we couldn’t see much. Nice photo of Eng 50 and some roof work too.
