Working fire in Waterloo, Ontario – February 8, 2016

February 8, 2016, Waterloo Ontario Fire Department was dispatched for an apartment fire at a student housing unit on Erb St West. Kitchener dispatch received one 911 call reporting flames coming out of a bedroom window. Two quints, a pumper, a pumper-tanker, and the platoon chief responded to the call with 17 firefighters. P1 reported smoke showing on arrival, and flames visible after a 360. Firefighters entered the top floor via the E2 outside stairway. The fire was knocked down in 15 minutes. Eighteen students were displaced by the fire. Box 690 provided rehab.

2-Alarm fire in Hagerstown, MD – February 4, 2016

Thursday evening (2/4/16), Hagerstown City (MD) fire crews were busy fighting a house fire on Day Road when another structure fire box was toned out on W. Washington St.  First arriving units, many of which were on mutual aid transfer to stations in the city reported a fire showing through the roof of a three-story apartment building.  Heavy fire was extending into the cockloft of the structure.  Crews confirmed reported entrapment and performed rescues of the occupants.  A 2nd alarm was sounded bringing in more mutual aid to the city.

Crews from Longmeadow Co. 27, Williamsport Co. 2, Maugansville, Waynesboro, PA, Funkstown, Hagerstown, Washington County Special Operations, Rehab 255 & Air Unit 25, Greencastle, PA, Halfway, Community Rescue Service 75, and more worked the job for over three hours performing extensive overhaul.

This was the first working structure fire for the new Engine 2-1 of the Williamsport, MD fire department.

Working fire in Chicago Heights, IL – February 6, 2016

The Chicago Heights Fire Department (IL) had a MABAS Box Alarm on Saturday morning (2/6) for a fire in a Walmart that is under construction at 21000 S. Western Avenue.  As far as I could tell, it was probably construction materials on the interior and did not involve the structure.  There were two aerials up and ready but no water was used on the roof.  I was not allowed to get any closer than the construction fence so the images you see here were taken from a distance.  Was able to at least shoot a few rigs.

MVA with entrapment in Colleton County, SC – February 5, 2016

A 25 yr. old woman suffered multiple traumatic injuries from a single-car crash in the 1000 block of Industrial Road north of Walterboro (SC) Friday evening 05-February. Colleton County (SC) Fire-Rescue was notified of the accident at 23:10 after a witness advised 9-1-1 a car had left the roadway and struck a tree.

Engine 19 and Medic 19, stationed two blocks away, arrived two minutes later to find a 2016 Nissan with massive damage and in several pieces on an embankment. Firefighter-Paramedics found the driver still alive and trapped in the wreckage. They requested a heavy rescue, then placed a medical helicopter on standby. Crews began treating the woman and started the extrication with Holmatro Rescue Tools carried on Engine 19. Treatment included spinal immobilization and multiple IVs.

After Rescue 1 arrived, additional hydraulic rescue tools were deployed to displace the dash. Engine 19’s personnel had already removed the remainder of the driver’s side of the car and the roof. The rear of the car was separated and a portion of the roof had been sheared off. The car had been traveling at a high rate of speed when it left the roadway, drove up an embankment, and struck a driveway. The car became airborne, clearing the driveway, then struck five trees, uprooting one small oak.  The extrication took approximately 20 minutes.

Once freed, the patient was rapidly transported by Medic 19 to the helipad at Colleton Medical Center to meet with LifeNet 4 stationed there. The patient was flown to the trauma center at MUSC in Charleston. The Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene and SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Engine 19, Medic 19, Rescue 1, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded. Battalion Chief Brent Dalton served as Incident Commander.

LOGAN CIRCLE AREA BLAZE

Heavy fire and water supply issues were challenges overcome by firefighters battling a Logan Circle neighborhood blaze on Wednesday night, February 3rd.

The fire took place around 9:30 PM at the Claridge House Apartments, 1221 M Street NW, a seven story occupied building that has been the scene of a number of fires over the years.

Flames had possession of a fifth floor apartment when the box assignment arrived. Problems with the standpipe resulted in low water pressure in the first attack line. Secondary lines were dropped out of windows from the fire floor to bypass the failed standpipe, while another line stretched from a different riser, and the blaze was knocked down.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital. Several civilians were also treated at the scene. All searches proved negative.

Multiple alarm commercial fire in Tobyhanna Township, PA – February 3, 2016

Around 8:30 AM on Wednesday, February 3, Monroe County (PA) 9-1-1 dispatched units to the Blakeslee Inn & Restaurant on Route 940 in Tobyhanna Township for a commercial fire alarm.  Soon after, reports of a structure fire began to come in.

Crews arrived to find a working fire in a large motel with restaurants inside. Extra assistance was immediately requested.  Firefighters throughout Monroe County were brought in as well as crews from Carbon, Luzerne, and Lackawanna Counties.

Tobyhanna Township Ladder 2 was on the scene in the front of the building using an elevated master stream while Lake Harmony Ladder 17 was set up in the rear. Tobyhanna Township Rescue 3 was the primary engine on the “C” side of the building pulling a draft from two portable ponds.  Albrightsville Rescue 1651 was the primary engine supplying Ladder 2 while a White Haven engine was also drafting out of ponds in the front of the building and supplied an elevated master stream by Freeland Ladder 136 who was on the “A” side.

At the height of the fire, crews were hampered by strong winds and torrential downpours.  A tanker task force was requested out of Luzerne County, and before 1:00 PM, the fire was brought under control. The equivalent of 6 or 7 alarms were called including 25 tankers.
