current fire scene photos that are not NEWS

April 18th, 2016 in front of Detroit Medical Center’s Heart Hospital.  The ambulance had pulled out from underneath the bay after dropping off a patient.  Detroit Engine 1 made quick work of it and it was an interesting few minutes of photography … to say the least.

These images were taken on April 23rd at a house fire at 67th and Indiana in Chicago.  It was a bedroom fire that was out before I could make it down the block, but I did get a few interesting shots that I thought I would share here. Eric Haak

Excerpts from the Newsdispatch.com:

At 5:08 a.m., the Michigan City Fire Department was dispatched for a reported structure fire at 1216 Tennessee St. MCFD responsed with four engine companies and an aerial unit. Upon arrival, MCFD personnel made entry into the structure where suppression efforts were made. During this time, firefighters breached a wall to look for fire extension and found that the fire had progressed throughout the structure.

During a trip to the city of Detroit in September, we attended this job in an occupied apartment building at Dragoon & Regular. It seemed like a typical quick knock down offensive attack, but a few minutes after we arrived the smoke pushing from the 2nd floor became quite heavy, and the fire was soon through the roof. Conditions were tough as it had been a very hot day and the humidity was extremely high and all the smoke just hung at street level. I got some images of the truck company leaving the roof as the fire was venting right on their heels. Judging by the graffitti on the walls of the building this was probably some sort of gang related arson. At any rate the members took quite a beating on this one. In the video and photos you can see a PPV fan operating at what appears to be the high point of the fire. I believe this unit was used on the other side of the intact firewall in an attempt to keep the smoke and heat from the uninvolved structures. At first it seemed kind of crazy to me but perhaps it had a good effect … may have made conditions more tenable in that exposure.

This was a box with 6 engines assigned at St John and Apple, a vacant 2-flat. Heavy fire in the rear and attic … narrowly kept from consuming both exposures. Access to the rear in Detroit is very iffy as there really are no passable alleys. Some good use of handlines and a master stream minimized the potential of several buildings becoming involved. Some interesting chunky smoke pictures from the attic.
