At 3:15 Saturday morning (1/23), companies in Chicago’s 14th Battalion were dispatched to 2213 West Cermak for the reported fire. Engine Company 23 landed a minute later and confirmed a working fire in the rear porches of a 30×70, three-story, ordinary, occupied apartment building. Companies worked for almost 20 minutes to contain the blaze but fire extension into the basement, first, and second floors forced a defensive attack at around 3:35. There was also fire extension into the adjoining “D” side exposure building that was quickly brought under control. Engine 109 worked their deck gun in sector “C” while Squad 1’s Snorkel was set up. Eventually, the fire was put out with several hand lines and master streams from the Snorkel and Tower Ladder 5. Companies worked for over four hours as the thermometer hovered around 10 degrees throughout the duration of the incident.

The Harvey Fire Department (IL) and MABAS 24 auto-aid companies had their hands full New Years’ Eve as they battled this house fire near 159th Street and Lexington. The home was reported as fully involved on arrival but then the search for working hydrants began. Every hydrant on the block and one block north of the fire building were inoperable. Country Club Hills Engine 14 was able to secure a working hydrant at 159th and Loomis while Posen Engine 2805 eventually found a positive source over 1,100 feet north of the fire building on Lexington. Despite facing these challenges, both exposure buildings were largely saved from sustaining significant damage.

1200 hrs today and just outside of Engine 109’s quarters. The 14th Battalion’s size-up was a 2-story ordinary furniture store, 25 x 80 with a fire on the 1st floor. The contents of the store were stacked floor to ceiling, front to back. Five minutes in, the box was requested. When I arrived, there was some fire on the second floor and companies were trying to unload the contents of the first. At 1255 hrs, the 2-11 was requested for manpower to assist the clearing out of the store. The alarm was struck out at 1330 hrs. Eric Haak
