The Lincolnshire-Riverwoods FPD (LRFPD) in Illinois was called to 24341 Elm Road early Friday morning (6/2/17) for the report of an ATV on fire. A followup call apparently notified dispatchers that the fire had spread to the attached garage. Lake Forest Engine 422 arrived first and advised that they had a fully-involved garage fire. LRFPD Engine 52, Squad 51, and Battalion 51 arrived right behind the first engine and all three suppression units exhausted their tank water on the initial attack. Countryside Engine 411 arrived with the Lincolnshire units and supplied their tank water inline as well. The home is located in an unincorporated area of Lake Forest without hydrants.

On arrival, Battalion 51 upgraded the alarm to a Code 4 for the working fire and simultaneously a MABAS Box Alarm was struck which would bring several water tankers in addition to supplemental fire suppression companies. Portable tanks were dropped from two tankers. While Long Grove drafted from the portable tanks supplying the engines at the scene, tankers from Countryside, Wauconda, Grayslake, and the Palatine Rural FPD shuttled water to the scene from a hydrant roughly a mile away.

The fire was largely contained to the garage with some extension into the house and attic.

The Countryside FPD (IL) received a call reporting a basement fire with explosions at 4 Keuka Court in Hawthorn Woods Saturday night (5/20/17). The homeowner stated that there were model cars with batteries in the basement which might have explained the explosive sounds. Firefighters arrived to light colored smoke escaping from the house.

The working fire was upgraded to a Full Still and the a Box Alarm for change of quarters companies only. Interior companies had difficulty locating the seat of the fire within the basement and the need for more substantial water supply required an upgrade to a Box Alarm for tenders.

As the fire grew in intensity and compromised a section of the first floor, all crews were ordered out of the building as the tactics changed to a defensive attack. The alarm was upgraded to a 2nd Alarm roughly 35 minutes into the incident.

Here are some images taken at Chicago’s 2-11 alarm at 9650 S. Ewing Ave. 4/15/17.  Apparently was a gas explosion. There were two transports and one was reported in very grave condition. Lighting was not optimal for taking pictures of the new snorkel but the pictures still give you a good idea of what the scene was like. Most of the fire load was in the rear and the snorkel was backed down the alley and placed in a vacant lot on the C/D corner. Eventually they relocated the snorkel to the front of the building and burned the roof off. There is also a short video of them setting up Squad 5A. Eric Haak

Sunday evening (3/26/17), at a massive industrial complex that was vacant and in disrepair at 6159 West Dickens Avenue in Chicago. A rubbish type fire deep in the building produced smoke conditions that made interior operations very dangerous. This job took a few hours and required the use of search lines as well as TICs. Not much to see from the outside but some varying smoke conditions. Steve Redick

Took in an unusual response in Chicago on the outbound JFK Expressway at Kimball. A semi truck struck the retaining wall and went over the side on an elevated portion of the roadway. The cab detached from the frame (which remained dangling over the lower roadway) and fell to the street below. The driver was reported as being pinned with both portions of the wreckage on fire.

The driver had been removed and was enroute to the hospital when I arrived. Reportedly he was not pinned, but as you might imagine seriously injured. I observed some of the recovery operations utilizing the large IDOT wrecker as well as a bit of the Lin-Mar wrecker operations. A haz mat response was also utilized due to leaking fuel and fluids on both the upper and lower portions of the incident.
