Some time before 0600 hrs on Thursday, December 19th, the Central Stickney Fire Protection District was dispatched to a house fire on the southwest corner of Lockwood Avenue and 49th Street. Companies arrived to find fire in a vacant, 2.5-story ordinary. This was the second fire in this residence and the garage was burned down a year or so ago.
I took this in on my way to work and when I got there, operations were strictly exterior. Fire had burned through the roof and most of it had collapsed into the attic space. Since I did not hear this dispatched, I am not sure why Central Stickney’s Truck 906 was not on scene. For those not familiar with Central Stickney, the fire building was four blocks from their station. Central Stickney Engine 905 (hydrant on the corner of 49th and Lockwood), Bedford Park Engine 710 (hydrant on the corner of 49th and Lorel), Stickney FD Truck 1204 (aerial raised off 49th Street) and Summit Engine 951 (not pumping but manpower working) were all on scene.

Companies on Chicago’s West Side were dispatched to this one-room fire in the afternoon of February 5, 2008. The company using the spare rig is Engine 95 who hit this with their deck gun as it was already venting itself from the second floor window. If I had not been a few blocks away, there would not have been much to photograph because companies had this knocked out in about 5 minutes. The incident was on the 2900 block of West Madison.
Eric Haak submitted a snowy winter fire from January of 2008.
This fire occurred in late January, 2008 in Harvey, Illinois, a south suburb of Chicago. There was a driving lake effect snow storm that evening which produced very thick, heavy snow flakes. For those who are not from Chicago, we regularly get snow that comes in off Lake Michigan when the atmosphere is right. When this happens it often creates blizzard-like conditions.
Similar to Gary, Indiana or Detroit, Michigan, the suburb of Harvey has seen it’s better days and today shows all of the signs of the blight created when the economic engines of the past have long moved on. The department runs out of 4 stations and has 57 career members.
On this particular evening, the Harvey Fire Department came across water issues when they arrived on the scene. When I arrived, the fire had already consumed most of the 1.5-story frame and the attention had turned to protecting the exposures. Unfortunately, this incident resulted in one fatality.
Eric Haak shares images from a 3-11 Alarm fire in Chicago on Christmas day in 2008
Here are some photos of a Christmas Day fire in a rendering facility in Chicago’s old stockyards area. The fire broke out on the 3800 block of South Morgan just after noon and was quickly upgraded to a 3-11 as temperatures hovered in the teens. The fire was contained to one section of the plant and the company remains in business today. A Level I Hazardous Materials response was also given for this incident as well.
