On Monday July 7th 2014, Detroit 1st Battalion companies were dispatched to a reported vacant dwelling fire at Ellery and Gratiot. Engine 41 arrived on the scene and reported two vacant dwellings totally involved. Engine 41 stretched on the the vacant two-story dwellings and setup for defensive operations. Chief 1 arrived on the scene and assumed command and requested an extra engine for manpower. This fire was fought in defensive mode for an hour before it was brought under control. Engines 41/9/17, Ladder 6, Squad 3, and Chief 1 responded to this incident.

On Sunday July 13th 2014, Detroit 5th Battalion companies were dispatched to a reported vacant commercial building fire at Oakland & Hague. While enroute Ladder 7 reported smoke showing. Upon arrival a well-involved vacant two-story, 100 X 50 commericlal building was found. Engine 17 arrived on the scene and stretched on the building. Chief 5 arrived on the scene and reported a doubtful and requested two extra engines and a truck.

Defensive operations were used on this fire. Master streams were deployed from Ladder 7 and Ladder 20 along with several handlines. This fire was brought under control in about 2 hours. Engine 17/39/1/44, Ladders 7/20, Squad 3, and Chief 5 responded to this incident.

This was the big job of the trip, a 4-flat going. We arrived a few minutes after the first companies to 1456 Canton. Strictly a cover the exposures and let it go job. Made for some nice images though. I can’t imagine getting used to seeing this kinda job every day like these guys do…
