Anne Arundel County Fire Department units were alerted to an electrical burning odor in a commercial business structure on Friday.  Upon arrival, units discovered high levels of carbon monoxide, spot fires and water leakage throughout the complex and surrounding terrain, and a second alarm was struck bringing more engine and truck companies to the scene as well as the Anne Arundel Alarmers Association (http://www.freewebs.com/anne_arundel_alarmers/apparatus.htm) Fire & Police support unit.

An underground utility fire was contained, units performed ventilation and had the incident under control within 4 hours.  No injuries were reported.

Here are some scene photos from Anne Arundel PIO Russ Davies, and a bystander Jennifer Holtzapple who were both on the scene early.  I took a bunch of apparatus shots when the crews were packing up and going back into service.

Anne Arundel Fire has some interesting apparatus including the air wagon which has a new cab mounted on the same E-One body used on past versions from as far back as 30 years.  Attached are two photos of the wagon, one from yesterday that I took and one taken by John Floyd II from his archives, when the body was mounted to a 1974 IHC L-1800 Loadstar cab.  You’ll also notice the abundance of other E-One apparatus on the Anne Arundel roster.

Anne Arundel 1st Alert has a video report of the incident here:  http://vimeo.com/104140585

These photos are of a single-family house fire on the west side of Villa Park, taken during a very cold and snowy winter afternoon in the early- to mid-1990′s. At the time the pictures were taken, units from Villa Park (including call-backs), Elmhurst, Lombard, and Addison were either on-scene or en route. Unsure if it was a General Alarm or a First-Level MABAS Box.

All photos were taken using a 35mm pocket camera- no digital or smartphones back then!  Hope you enjoy the brief trip down memory lane!

Montgomery County Fire & Rescue units from the 2nd Battalion including Rescue Squad 1 (Bethesda Chevy Chase Rescue Squad), Engine 707, and Tower 51 (National Institutes of Health) responded to the building fire on Connecticut Ave. in Chevy Chase on Monday afternoon.  This job was toned out as I was returning from the College Park Engineering Lab fire.

Units briefly had to double check with dispatch regarding the location of the incident since the dry cleaning business’ building is so small and nestled between some larger commercial structures.  A slight haze and odor was located inside the dry cleaners building and firefighters quickly cleared the smoke.  The incident was placed under control and units were quickly returned to service.

I finally got a chance to fly the drone over a real fire!  It took a while, but it was worth the wait.

Here are some photos of the Full Still house fire in Harvey on 8/19/14. Companies arrived with smoke coming out the front door and determined the fire to be in the basement which is when they requested a full still. Prince Georges County Fire & EMS 4th and 6th Battalion units were toned out for the building fire in the Engineering Lab Building  on the University of Maryland campus on Monday.  First due units including Engine 812 (College Park), Truck 834 (Chillum-Adelphi), and Rescue Squad 814 (Berwyn Heights) located a small fire in one of the labs and knocked it quickly.  Units cleared smoke, checked for extension and performed overhaul.

PGFD HazMat units were briefly called to the scene since the fire was in a lab, but determined no hazardous materials mitigation was needed.  Units remained on the scene for approx. 2 hours.  Here are some apparatus and crew shots.

Cause of the fire was determined to be an electrical malfunction.  Working sprinklers were activated during the fire and helped to keep damage to a minimum.

These images are from a 3-11 Alarm fire at 1974 N. Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago on August 15, 2001. This was perhaps the first fire that I shot using a digital camera.
