Hawthorn Woods, IL abandoned house fire, August 17, 2013

Several weeks ago, the Lake Zurich Fire Department (IL) responded to a reported house fire in nearby Hawthorn Woods, which is within their fire district. They found fire in an abandoned two-story house on a wooded lot that was extremely grown over.

Companies hit the fire and made a quick search before declaring the structure unsafe for interior operations to overhaul and completely extinguish the fire. At that point, a decision was made to standby and monitor the building, letting the fire consume the entire structure.

4-Alarm fire in Rolling Meadows, IL May 25, 2009

The Town of Rolling Meadows is located in the northwest suburbs of Chicago and had two unusually memorable fires several weeks apart in May of 2009. Within two miles of each other, they had a 3-Alarm and then a 4-Alarm fire in two different three-story condominium buildings.

The fire shown here was the second and occurred on May 25th of that year at 5200 Carriageway Drive. The fire was in a third floor storage room adjacent to the center stairway behind a mansard roof. Moderate smoke was showing on arrival, but as the fire took hold of the attic space and was fanned by high winds, it grew quickly and vented through the roof.

Companies made an interior attack with lines taken in through third floor balconies, but they were chased out by the fire overhead which was then hit from the outside. Some residents were evacuated off of balconies. The fire was reported around 11:15AM.

2-Alarm fire in Deer Park, IL 10-3-13

At roughly 5:30AM on Thursday, a citizen reported a house on fire at 21660 Rainbow Road in Deer Park, IL. The Lake Zurich Fire Department, which provides coverage for Deer Park, responded along with mutual aid companies from several surrounding fire departments. On arrival, they found fire through the roof of a large, modern, mansion which has been vacant and for sale for several years.

The neighborhood is without fire hydrants, so the second engine dropped a portable tank while another engine dropped LDH to the main road where water tankers (tenders) would shuttle through and dump into a pair of portable tanks.

Fire damage was contained to the roof and attic area of origin, though the interior sustained a fair amount of smoke and water damage.

3-Alarm fire in Detroit, October 2006

Steve Redick submitted this huge fire from Detroit in October of 2009 which produced spectacular smoke conditions.

October 2006. 3rd alarm equivalent at Vinewood and Toledo, Detroit. Unoccupied commercial with storage of resins and chemicals. Heavy toxic smoke conditions caused a Level 3 haz mat to be assigned as well. This fire was occurring at the same time Chicago had the 5-11 alarm in the south loop, at the old George Diamond’s Steakhouse building. This was one of the more spectacular fires I have seen in Detroit, and I was awarded a cover photo on Firehouse magazine from this fire.

Dan Shelin was in Detroit last week and took in this fire on the 23rd of September.

9/23/13 Detroit ,Michigan. Commercial building on fire at Livernois & Buchanan. 25 x 50, 1 1/2 story ordinary. Ladder 22 was dispatched to a location a few blocks away to check for a fire. They reported nothing found. Central then recieved the correct location from a caller and Ladder 22 found heavy smoke from this building. Fire was in sector 1 roof section, but caused a smoke condition throughout. Thanks Dan Shevlin
