Glenn Duda took in the Manchester 3-Alarm fire last week and submitted several images.

10/12/13 Manchester, CT – A three alarm fire ripped through a century old building, housing businesses and apartments above. Firefighters were called to the building around nine thirty on the report of smoke in the hallway. Firefighters found a deep seated basement fire. They were unable to control the fire and had to pull out for an exterior attack. The fire went to three alarms bringing departments from throughout Hartford County. The fire was brought under control several hours later. The building was a total loss and had to be torn down after the fire. The cause of the fire in under investigation by the state fire marshal.

Glenview Police and Fire Departments were called early this afternoon for an accident involving a garbage truck and an SUV which occurred at the intersection of Harlem Avenue and Harrison Street. The garbage truck, from the Village of Skokie, was fully loaded when it struck the other vehicle that reportedly crossed in it’s path. As the truck, which had a large plow assembly on the front, pushed the car along the parkway, the car rolled over and onto the roof. The truck came to rest on top of the car, and a fire ensued involving the cab of the truck and the car.

Three occupants were trapped in the car, all of whom perished. The truck driver was able to free himself from the truck and was apparently unharmed.

Glenview Engine 6 arrived on the scene and hit the fire with tank water through the deck gun and then a hand line was used to fully extinguish the fire and lay down a layer of foam.

An area resident who attempted to assist with a fire extinguisher was driven back by the intense heat.

Tray Cashman, who lives down the street, captured this video of Engine 6 arriving and hitting the fire.

More from the archives of Eric Haak in Chicago

The images seen here were taken on Chicago’s West Side in August, 2009.  I was only a half mile away from this incident when Chicago’s Main Fire Alarm Office dispatched companies.  I unfortunately did not hear the address correctly and went north instead of south which took me nearly a mile in the wrong direction.  I realized my error when Engine 44 reported a large 3-flat with heavy fire blowing out the windows on 2 and 3 and then saw a large header in my rear view mirror.  I recovered in time to still get some good shots, although I practically cry every time I think about what could have been.  This fire was on the 1000 block of North Lawndale in the West Humboldt Park neighborhood.
